Max Capacity
A good friend of mine had to have her cat replaced 05 Outback 2.5i Limited. The Dealer covered the job, 78,000 miles. Before she always got less then 24.3 mpg normally she's in between 21 and 23mpg. Since the new cat, she now see's 25 + mpg. Nothing else has changed. Has anybody else noticed a increase in mpg after replacing the OEM cat with a new one? 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Engine Build - Click Here
987687
were the O2 censors bad too? if they were, that would probably be the main reason the gas mileage increased.
Max Capacity
As far as I know only the cat. I've heard of other people on here that get low mpg. I wonder if they had bad cat's or bad O2's. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. mikeislord
I would have assumed O2 sensors as well.
987687
I'd assume that o2 censors are part of a cat. kit and that they wouldn't re-use the old ones. But ya never know...
Max Capacity
I'll have to see if she if knows if the O2's were replaced too. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. 987687
They may also have flashed some updated firmware onto the ECU that improved the gas mileage.
silbeej
Only thing i'm wondering is do cars get lower MPG as they age, or does it go up? But it was probably the O2.

boosten-n-bluntin
a new cat flows more air the more air you can flow the more hp and mpg.
Max Capacity
Only thing i'm wondering is do cars get lower MPG as they age, or does it go up? At 105,000 miles my 05 is getting more mpg then 5 years ago. But I also drive differently now. I'm focused on using less gas and sticking it to OPEC. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
