Wheel Stealing MFers

One of my good friends just had his rims stolen overnight... a very sad story.

I don't have access to facebook here at work but maybe will link pics when I get home.

My question is, since there apparently are no threads about this at all, what are preventative measures we could take to reduce the risk of our nice shiny rims being stolen? Currently I park in a garage so I don't really have that concern but I may be moving to Philly for a job rotation... I will not have that luxury there.

What are the options to keep our rims from being stolen?

Discuss.

(Google didn't turn up too much either, vast majority of results were about cars being stolen.)

How about... 5 different sets of wheel locks? :)

Do you even have a set of wheel locks? Seriously though... had some people try to steal them off my old car, thankfully they screwed up one of the wheel locks. Yes, I had 2 different sets of wheel locks and gorilla locks. Don't be fooled, some of them you can use different sockets to get them off.

I favor McGuard lugs that have the patterns on the inside, and round outsides (so you can't use different sized sockets to get them off).

A professional wheel thief will just hammer on a socket just small enough to get wedged on the round lock and get them off. If they want the wheels bad enough, they will get them, no matter what you do.

Well yes of course.. if someone wants anything bad enough, then they will get it.

But it certainly makes their life difficult. And even with the McGuard locks that I mention, it's tough to get the socket on without losing grip.

It's not a solution, but again.. deterrance certainly helps!

If they want them bad enuf, they'll get them. They make tools to remove locking lugs, I have the set from snap-on. People are forever loosing their wheel locks.

Hire an armed guard, tie a large angry pit bull to the car, or just let them go and make sure you have insurance coverage for them.

Deterent, that is the key word. A thief may move on to another car if he/she see locks. Those Mcguard locks you mentioned are easily defeated, did one in the shop here last month, but again, it's a good deterent.

Of course your insurance covers stock wheels.... if you have aftermarket ones, get the receipts, show the insurance, have them take pictures of them etc.

Unless they are extremely expensive, they will still fall under the same price as OEM wheels.

ALARM?! They have wheel tilt sensors for this very reason :) ... Either way if someone really wants them they will get them.. but making it harder will help :)

Is this a good price for McGard locks?

Those Spline drives would be really easy to remove IMO.

Like was said before, if they want them bad enough they will get them. Tell him to try parking in better lit areas or somewhere with more traffic.

He currently lives in a section of condo's up north of you, in East Windsor.

The theory is that someone saw him on the highway/local roads leading to his condo and followed him. He has an 09 orange Honda Fit... so I guess not very inconspicuous, and apparently honda stock rims are very popular?

Are our lugs M12 x 1.25? Does the depth of the lug nut matter (e.g. can you get some that are too short)? (I think once with some aftermarket wheels they sent longer lug nuts.)

Thanks and sorry about your friend's wheels.
