Better performance and MPG?

Recommended Posts

I just bought my 2005 GT today and am looking for a good weekend project. I see a lot of posts on here about mods that boost horsepower, and a few other posts complaining about gas mileage, but would love to know if there are any good mods that would yield better performance and simultaneously get me a few more miles per gallon... not that I'll be driving it to maximize fuel efficiency anyway.

I'm also curious if anyone would be hesitant about suddenly adding a bunch of mods to this engine, which already has 45,000 miles on it. The previous owner left everything stock.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get a better air filter, change the spark plugs and run some fuel injector cleaner through it for starters. After that; your first/biggest increase in power would come from a Tuner or a Cobb Access Port. I guess you could start with the hogzaust mod(washers in muffler flanges).

I left my car basically stock until 36K and then did intake, exhaust, bigger intercooler, bigger injectors and so on. Then just a week or so ago; I put a much bigger turbo at 60K miles. These engines are just getting broken in at 45,000 and you have a long way to go before you would really have to worry about hurting it with power mods;).

Let's kick this pig!

^ Also run a slightly higher PSI in your tires. Under inflated tires can decrease mpg.

over inflated can create tire wear.

and i get about 17-19 mpg... granted if i drove on the freeway all day everyday in no traffic and not going over 70mph id get like 28mpg... but i dont.

remember its not Miles Per Gallon... its Smiles Per Gallon.

Do you think he's really going to want to mess around with an opensource tune?

He's got to be some what computer literate he found this site. plus some people like to learn about there car, he might just be one(after all he is asking). I just wish someone would have told me how easy it really is when i first got my car.

I got my autonostics cable from that site (link) all the way up here in AK, only took a week. your bad experiance can't speak for everyone.

"slightly higher" isn't going to amount to anything.
