Service Add-ons

Recommended Posts

Im will be doing the 60000mile service right away here and when I called the dealership to inquire about the cost and what it included, they were recommending "add-ons", a fuel system clean, transmission flush, and a power steering flush.

Getting all that done pushes the cost up about 500 bucks(cdn) which is ridiculously stupid.

I was just going to have them do the basic maintenance but I do have a knocking sound in my engine when I turn the car off. Similar to if you were running bad gas in the engine. Its just the knock and ping and it annoys me because cars are not to be doing that today. I wanted the dealership to service it this time for warranty purposes and to put in the system that I serviced it at their facilities. Ive owned the car for about 2 months and want to protect the warranty and if required, have it handled through warranty (its a shot atleast)

Would you guys recommend I do any of these add ons?

Any suggestions about the engine knock?

Disregard the other post I made, it wasn't very clear.

Thanks,

Most service add-ons are a sham and just a way for the stealership to make more money. If they were necessary don't you think they would be included in the maintenance schedule?

Besides, I suspect that a fuel system clean consists of putting a $5 bottle of fuel system cleaner in your tank. Transmissions/engine flushes are a waste of money if you change the fluid at the specified times. I've never even heard of someone having a power steering flush done.

Now, just a precaution. It's true, not everything is in the maintenance schedule. Mine never tells me to change the transmission fluid under normal driving conditions (but every 15,000 during severe). Most of the vehicles I've owned call for it to be changed around 100,000 miles. That's when I'll change mine, assuming I keep the outback that long (currently has 7,200).

Talk about contradiction:lol:

Actually the Maintenance guide is considered minimal, but some of the stuff is added on can be unreasonable.

I had the dealership here tell me that fuel system cleaner and transmission flush was part of the normal 60k mile service program.

since I'm doing as much as possible of this myself.. I'm trying to find a good fuel system cleaner as I imagine after 60k miles it could probably be a benefit.. one of those in tank systems should be fine righty?

Just tell them not to do it.

It's your car, tell them to take that stupid garbage off the work order. Be sure it is off before you sign the form and give them the keys.

My dealer asked if I wanted a fuel system cleaning when I did the plugs at 60,000. I told him I use gasoline with an advertised cleaner and dump a 20 oz bottle of Techron into the tank a week before I change the oil (every 2 months). The dealer acknowledged I didn't need it, but a month later I got a mailing offering a clean-up of my musty air conditioner for $90. It doesn't smell musty at all, but I wonder if people buy this stuff.

I just bought some STP fuel injector cleaner. It was like $2. also got a gatorback accessory belt and some rain-x lattitude wipers.

its gonna take me a few months to do my 60k mile service, but I'll get there eventually

Throw the STP shit in the can. It is junk. Yes, you should be changing your tranmission fluid at 60k. It is your car so you can do what you want. I change my fluid every 30k.

trans flush yes....everything else is rediculous add-ons from parasitic companies like Wynn's and BG.They make up the service menus at alot of dealerships..Not to mention some nooge adding a drip-style injector cleaner and cooking your turbo or cat-convertors.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic so it absorbs fluid from the air this should be change after 3-4 years or 90,000 miles.

Two gys @ my shop always sell PS,brake and injector services all the time.Hell they even sell them to Prius owners w/ electric steering and regen brakes.About the same a pick pocketing in m eyes.

I'm OCD about my cars trans fluid and service but this because I have access to everything for free.
