Opinion(s) on Falken ZE-912 vs KUMHO SPT

I am debating between Falken ZE-912 and KUMHO SPT, and would appreciate your feedback. These are for summer daily driving in 225/40/18 and no racing.

Some have reviewed both tires and noted the 912 to have a softer sidewall compared to the SPT...how soft is SPT's sidewall?

I welcome other tires suggestion in the somewhat affordable range as I know SPT and 912s are low budget, a set of Michelins would be nice but no need for such.

The Falken 912s are all season performance touring and the Kumho SPT are summer performance touring. I have the Kumho SPT (225/40/18) on MY06 LGT (daily driving and no racing) and have been very happy with them. The SPT sidewalls are on the firm side but not jarring except for the occasional "bad" potholes. We put the Falken 912s on my son's '98 Forester L (215/60/16) but it is NA and definitely not in the same class as my LGT. MY recommendation would be to go with the Kumhos.

21,000 miles on my 912s on my 2006 Civic SI, which runs 215/45/17 on a 2800 pound 200 HP FWD car.

I'm really despising them recently. After 10,000 miles, their good characteristics began dissapearing rapidly. After 15,000 miles, they officially became annoying.

Now, at 21,000, they don't track well AT ALL on the highway....so my car tends to wander within the lane and require alot of attention. They don't absorb bumps at all anymore. And they are VERY noisy at speeds of 15-45 MPH and pretty noisy on 80% of highway surfaces.

I can't wait to get rid of them honestly.

What they are still good for: Throwing into a corner. I find their sidewall to be great then, as the FEEL as fantastic and they breakaway very progressively.

But I commute 64 miles a day on almost all straightaways....so I need a tire that absorbs bumps decently, isn't too noisy, and tracks well.

In for other input on the Kuhmos. I bot General Exclaim UHPs when I replaced the RE92s back in the Summer. Ther Generals are fine but too LOUD. It was a toss up between the Exclaims and Kuhmos.

I am looking for new tires for the Prodrives and was going to the Kuhmos...would lOVE the GS-D3s but too much $$$.

912s have been alright for me, considering i swapped out re92s for them (on new rims in the same size op is considering). i'd wager really anything feels like it performs, coming from those.

i agree with joe, somewhat, they actually feel pretty good cornering; but i haven't really had any of the negative issues he mentions. they are a bit loud for an A/S, but nothing i can't live with. some other positives not mentioned is that they hold pressure very well, and seem fairly durable, pothole-wise -- but that's about it.

all in all, i say they are an adequately capable, but very unspectacular A/S.

keep in mind that if you get snow at all where you live, these are worthless -- that may sound harsh, but there's no better way to put it.

in rain they aren't as good as some other tires i've had, but i haven't noticed any hydroplaning.

if i ever had a choice in the matter (these were mounted on the rims i bought), i'd do contis for about the same money, without a doubt.

as for the op's poll, i'd probably go with the kuhmos.

Similar experience to JoefromPA on the 912's . They rode nicely at first but quickly deteriorated after 15'000 miles. I run Kuhmo victoracers V 710 on the track and will return to them (the brand) as my street tire.
