EvilCamaroSS
You are a fool. SO i bought my car from a board member who bought the car in atlanta with XM already isntalled in the car, it was an XM commander unit, So, i have had XM for a couple months, and i noticed that i am consistantly getting static on it, no matter what FM transmitter frequency i use, the statis isn't unbearable but rather annoying, So I decided to take out the XM to see where the issue is coming from, So I'm takin stuff out, and i see this Y cable wrapped in electrical tape, upon further inspection. it's a Y antenna adapter with the male part cut off and taped up, To keep a long story short: The Y cable was connecting the antenna relay box (the box that cuts off the stock antenna so the XM can come through cleanly) and it was running to some wire in the dash, i traced this antenna wire back and it went up the drivers side of the car to the back panel by the window, Whoever installed this, used a wire tap and a bitch clip to hardwire this antenna cable into a normal looking cable and hook it into the relay box, needless to say it didn;t work in that ghetto manner, I dunno why u wouldn't just spend the $30 to get the antenna adapters from best buy? So i got my dash all apart, going to best buy tomorrow to order the adapters to make it work correct. I always thought the install was a little sketchy because the antenna was on the inside of the car on the front dashboard. so in the process i moved the antenna to the back window, It wasn't magnetic so i wasn't about to put it outside the car, i figured the back window would get better reception neway. SVXdc
You're not the first person I've heard tell a story like this. At some shops, if they don't have the install harness they need and the customer is waiting for their "free" installation, they just hard-wire the connection. Not right, but it's how they get it done quickly. Consider getting Jazzy's kit to connect the XM receiver directly into your stock HU (instead of via an FM modulator). Otherwise, if you're near Fry's Electronics, they may have the Subaru antenna adapter kit for slightly less. I always thought the install was a little sketchy because the antenna was on the inside of the car on the front dashboard. I think many (most?) of the satellite antennas are "indoor only." Subaru sticks theirs inside, on the upper passenger corner of the windshield.
zmarko
I always thought the install was a little sketchy because the antenna was on the inside of the car on the front dashboard. I've had mine there for 2.5 years with no problems, and I wouldn't call my install "sketchy". I have it at the base of the A-pillar in the corner on the passenger side just to the right of the sensor. Looks clean and no one ever notices it. It gets great reception for the most part, unless I'm behind a huge building.

Yeah, I wouldn't care for it in the center of the dash. I like it where I have it...here's a pic (I actually have a lower profile one there, but just threw this up in my 2nd car to show where I had it). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/zmarko/sirius.jpg
EvilCamaroSS
I got the adapters from best buy, they were $24.99 each, but since i do work there part time i got them for Significantly less. I also was having recaption issues with the antenna so i moved it to your suggested location and it works a lot better now, Only thing i'm kinda pissed about is i scratches the face of my OEM headunit when i pulled it out to install the adapters, kinda sucks but i'll get use to it over time i guess. That sucks. They scratch extremely easily.

TSiWRX
I wonder..... Since your car was an '05, could this original work have come at a time when Metra did not yet make the antenna adapters? <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family

Possibly, but it would have to have been very early — Metra came out with the adapters around June 2005.
TSiWRX
^ True. I forgot about that! ---- I wired up the wife's new '09 FXT last night. I think I did a much better job than that guy, above. <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family

TSiWRX
Question for zmarko and anyone else who may have the antenna inside the cabin..... This is the way I have it, in my wife's '09 Forester, too. I tried running the antenna out to the outside, to the front of the vehicle's roof.....but the weatherstripping on this new car is *very* tight, and with the limited time that I had on my hands the other night ( I work on the cars after my daughter's bedded-in for the night, so that doesn't leave me much time, if I want to get to sleep at a decent hour, myself ), I had a lot of trouble getting it wired outside. Do you guys have any trouble with in-vehicle based compasses? Some kind of electromagnetic interference? My wife's FXT came without the compass mirror - no big deal. I tried putting in an aftermarket "ball-in-water" compass, just above her inside rearview, and whenever the car's on, the compass reading's corrupted. You can actually see the compass "righting" itself, when you move it towards the rear of the cabin. By the time I get the compass between the two front seats, it's again pointed the right direction. ???????? <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family
