wingsno19
96 Legacy GT, AT; new engine swap to 2.2 (have about 5K on the new engine). I just started having a starting problem. 10% of the time it will not start. Either nothing or a slow turn-over with no start. Then it starts no problem. Is this my Starter that is about to die? Also, I smell gas on startup, but then it goes away. Separate or related problem?
987687
The slow cranking sounds like a bad battery to me. As for the gas, check where the gas lines connect to the tubing on the engine, and the tubes at all the injectors to check for leakage. Probably also check the fuel filter. wingsno19
Any idea why sometimes it slowly cranks, sometimes nothing, then vooom; no problem? That is why I thought it was the starter. Fuel Filter: anyone know how often this needs to be replaced?

Fuel Filter: anyone know how often this needs to be replaced? It could be the starter. If it has been running for a while, does it crank nice and fast? because the battery would be charged up. If the battery is shot it will lose a lot of it's power just sitting over night, and then in the morning it will crank slowly. But once it fires up the alternator will be charging the battery, and everything will be fine. Have you noticed any patterns with it? As for the gas, if you smell gas, chances are it is leaking somewhere. As I said, just check all the connections.
wingsno19
There is no pattern with the starting. 90% of the time it starts perfect. The other 10% - no idea. Sometimes it does nothing. Sometimes it tries to turn over but doesn't. Then a second later it starts perfect. Strange. Would a bad starter be doing that? I always thought it would grind and make a noise when failing? I will check the gas lines and look to replace the filter.
Osei
check your electrical connections for something loose. Especially battery cables and engine ground wires.
