JoeFromPA
/Begin Rant I am growing to despise our stock clutch. I have begun to realize that EVERYTIME I back out of my townhome parking space, I get clutch stink. I park on a flat spot and have an easy process of backing up. The clutch is obviously not heated already from slipping, because this is the first shift I do. I literally am slipping the clutch for less than 1.5 seconds, as I'm incredibly easy on it because I know how sensitive it is. Nevertheless, starting about 3 weeks ago I noticed a little smell. Kinda sulfury & burning. As of yesterday, it was distinct, strong, and my wife looked at me and said "Eww....is that the clutch?". It went away immediately. I never smell it during any other driving experience....which should show you how little i slip the clutch. This thing is disgusting. I can't back out of a flat open parking space without getting clutch stink? I really don't look forward to dropping $1000 on a new clutch & installation, but I can't wait to get this thing out. Thank God I have a single-mass flywheel stock and just need a new clutch Joe
KartRacerBoy
If it's a rotten egg smell (sulfur), it's the cat, not the clutch.

I have an 08 2.5i 5MT and never once had any clutch issues backing up or in tight spaces ( parking lots, drive thru, etc) Could it be a defect? If you go AM clutch you might as well go AM Fly wheel cut down on the overall mass
JoeFromPA
It's not bad meaning shot. It drives just fine. The 05+ LGT clutches tend to "stink" extremely easily....meaning they give off a pungent odor of heated clutch at the slightest inclination. It has almost 20k miles on it. I just want to get it to 60k. It's just ridiculous how much it needs to be babied to avoid it stinking.

KartRacerBoy
My clutch stopped stinking eventually (between 20-25k). It has 68000 miles on it and no signs of slipping.
JoeFromPA
That's good to know. Especially considering you are Stage 2. I never get any stink except for just in the last few weeks backing out of my parking spot. It's so odd because there's no heat in the clutch at that point vs slipping it a bit starting off up a hill, when there'd already be some initial heat. My wife daily drives it and she's fairly observant about smells....she's never mentioned getting any clutch stink.

ooahman
you may have another problem or you got a "bum" clutch. I have 110,000 miles on a stock clutch. I bought a new one at 75,000 miles because KOP was haiving a sale. It is still sittting in my garage. I have a slightly moded LGT, AP Stage 1 , Borla Cat back and KandN Cold air intake. Good luck in the future , I hope you get a better clutch this time. 05' LGT Wagon with 5 Spd The Coolest Mod !

If you go AM clutch you might as well go AM Fly wheel cut down on the overall massOr, since you have half the hp, you could have a different clutch compound? My 09 WRX clutch is a little better now with 6,000 miles, but slipping it enough to get out of a snowy parking space will get a bad smell. I'll probably go aftermarket just to be rid of it if it doesn't improve by 20K or so. Who Dares Wins スバル

Woodstock
I was going to the movies with friends yesterday, one with evo10 and the other with 07 STI. They were doing WOT; racing each other, so I thought that I should catch up and join them. At WOT I smell my clutch, gear 3rd-5th. is that normal? Bbc84
only time i got clutch stink, was practicing going up a very steep incline without using the ebrake. And trying to back out of my driveway with almost a foot of snow.

Usually you only smell those once you turn the car off after driving See if it goes away soon.
Woodstock
It went away in seconds... My car is brand new with 5000+ mileage. It smells like lubricants, engine, oil, gases mixed all together.
