4wheeling Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Hi, I searched the threads on cruise control issues and my condition right now does not fit any of them. Initially the cruise control would disengage itself after about 2 hours and sometimes even sooner. Took it in for service and they replaced the NSS. It seemed to be fixed meaning it did not disengage itself. The problem now is that the cruise will engage when coasting in neutral at speeds above 40 mph. When that happens naturally the car just revs to redline, which is not good. I took the car in for service again and the dealer said that they see the problem but everything passes their tests. The dealer said they will call tech line but my question is this. My car is at 64000 miles so no warranty. Did anything like this happen to anyone else out there? If so what was the issue and how much did it cost? Any chance this is from something that is still covered? Is there anything that I can do or say to get them to cover this? My reasoning is that the NSS was replaced during powertrain warranty period and it was not fixed completely. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks. PS: If this is not the proper location for this thread please move it.
qikslvr Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 It may not be the NSS that is the problem, but rather the thickness of the washer they use to space it properly in the housing. There is a TSB about it somewhere. I'll try to find it. Let's kick this pig!
4wheeling Posted January 26, 2009 Author Posted January 26, 2009 I thought the NSS and the washer used was for the cutting out issue. After the dealer fix for cutting out I have never experienced that issue again but rather now it engages when the car is in neutral while coasting above 40 mph. The called me back today and said they have to do more tests but they can't guarantee that it will be covered under warranty. What parts are involved in cruise control and what are their warranty coverages?
blackfang Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Hopefully, they get it fixed for ya. Let us know the outcome. Depending on what is at fault, it can still be covered. qikslvr Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 They should be able to log the "state" of the NSS. It should be steady and not flicker on and off (1 or 0). If it does flickers it can cause te cruise to kick off. If it stays at a steady "in gear" signal state, then the cruise can be engaged at any time. The trick is getting the NSS spaced right so it won't flicker in gear and so it won't think it in gear when it's in neutral. Again, have them look for TSB's about it and check the specs on spacing for the NSS. I logged mine on a two hour roadtrip one day and watched the NSS flicker between 0 and 1 the whole way. If I just rested my hand on the shifter it would not flicker and the cruise wouldn't kick off. If your's will engage the cruise even in neutral; it tells me that you NSS is not spaced properly (probably too close) and it always sees the shifter as "in gear". let us know what they find out. Should be a cheap fix, but may be an expensive diagnostics session... Let's kick this pig!
4wheeling Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 I talked with the service adviser and he could not give me an estimate on how long it would take them. He made it sound like if it takes them 2 days that I would be responsible for the charges. I just wasnt ready for that considering I bought the car from them and expected little more. How did you log your NSS state? What software and/or hardware would I need to do that? Can you provide instructions on how to do it? I would appreciate that very much. Thanks.
blackfang Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Have they tried re-flashing the ecu to address the cruise control systems? qikslvr Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 How did you log your NSS state? What software and/or hardware would I need to do that? Can you provide instructions on how to do it? I would appreciate that very much... You just need a Tactrix or Vag-Com cable, a latop and RomRaider(www.romraider.com). In the logging software there is a switch parameter called "Neutral Position Switch". Here is a link to another thread on the topic. It has some more specifics on the fix: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30814&highlight=neutral+position Once you get a laptop, cable and software let me know and I'll send you a PM with detailed instructions. 4wheeling Posted December 4, 2009 Author Posted December 4, 2009 I finally got a cable and logged the state of the NSS while driving. When in neutral it is a 1 and in gear it is a 0, does not flicker. My cruise engages when coasting in neutral. What do I look for or test next? Is there a separate cruise control module or is it all one unit with the ECU?
