Madjik_Man Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I have the 2.5i and was thinking about getting the fog light kit. I'd mainly want it for the Winter drives up the mountain passes So my questions to you Colorado/Rocky Mt brethren are: 1. Is the functionality/safety worth the money? 2. If so, what bulbs would you recommend?
Hops Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 If you are looking for better visibility, you are better off getting an HID kit for your headlights. The fogs are just for looks, in my opinion. Buy my cars!

Hops Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I'm about to do this to both of my Legacys and I have been doing my research... There are a couple vendors on this site that have them and there are some easy walk-throughs, too. Just search around this site... You can find anything here. Buy my cars!

Nice just started to do some searching of threads and now have one more quesiton With 2, 3, 5x the light output, do you think it'd be worse when driving in a blizzard and getting reflection off the falling snow (the "Star Wars hyperdrive" effect)
Madjik_Man Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 that's a concern for sure maybe just a HID set up for the fog lights so that they're lower to the ground?
Hops Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I think the HID headlights would actually do just fine. A friend of mine just did HID headlights and fog lights on his LGT and he got pulled over for them being too bright. It looks way good, though... Buy my cars!
bsdzine Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Praedet is rocking 3000k HID fogs - perhaps he will chime in and tell you how he got his. I am pretty sure he did a retro for them, as I think he has retro headlights as well... not too sure about that however. There is a HUGE difference between my old (4300k) HIDs & regular OEM lights, imho. I am back to my OEM lighting as when I got in my little bender with a snowbank, my ballasts were knocked out - it's a huge difference to me, especially wearing my glasses at night (road signs are visible with HIDs!) I also took out the yellow fog overlays I had, and I saw a difference the first night driving. The yellow lights weren't as bright (99% sure it was due to the overlays) but in the snow, shadows (depth) & road grooves were much more visible, and reflection was cut down. From all of this, I now want either HID fogs or a better bulb. So I am back in your boat. I have a new set of Xtreme ballasts w/ philips 4300k bulbs en route, as well as HIR1 high beams (which I have never tried!) I would love to do an HID fog setup, but there are options I haven't researched yet. A simple switch to some yellow H3 fogs might do the trick... Let me know what you decide to do and how you like it. I'm hoping someone can chime in and let us know their setup as well. Cheers brian

Cheers thanks for the input do you make it up to the mountains a lot in the Winter? Granted the OEM subbie lights are a helluva lot better than my '98 Taco's and 1968 Bronco's but I did notice in December during those big storms that visibility could probably be better... but I'm hesitant if the HIDs would increase the feeling of blazing through the galaxy at hyper drive speeds when it's snowing
bsdzine Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 ^ I try to make it up every other week to go riding, but I'm mostly just cruising (aka sitting) on 70 and the roads that get to whichever mountain I head up to - and I leave before sunset. I work in Golden, and drive 93 to/from daily. With the horrible gusts of wind, lousy drivers, and invisible plows; snow driving is horrible. With my HIDs, snow was hyper-drive during heavy downfalls during appropriate speeds (usually 30-50mph depending on terrain). With the yellow overlays, I wouldn't be able to just run with the fogs & ambers so I had to run them with my HIDs - which completely overpowered the fogs. The yellow fogs would be visible at about 20-25 feet in front of the car until the HIDs took over - going 40mph in the snow... you wouldn't notice something small and white on the road until it was too late. This is why I'd love to get 3000k fogs! It'd be great if CO allowed people to run 3000k headlights during winter! (I see alot of 70's era porsche running them around here...) brian
bsdzine Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Also, check out this thread - it gave me a good idea of where to start now that I'm back to stock! Pretty much the least expensive options; I'm going the high-beam route based upon the article & cost effectiveness - granted, I don't really run them, but I will when they arrive. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45991 brian
enthusiast Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I read that thread a while ago and was thinking of doing that do my fogs as well. Good information. My mod list
