Windy Road, just as something to toss around, think about using pre-cut/pre-wired LED-based (I think that the CCFL option would make it much too bright to use, in-cabin, my CCFL halos literally serve as "nav lights" when I come home late, and park the car, lighting up my driveway rather nicely) "halo rings" for your project.

Did this up real quick. Didn't have any thick pieces of lexan around the house so I had to put two pieces together. The general idea works and it seems to provide a nice light. I'll have to make a piece as big as the cup holder and see how many led's are needed.

10 led's running off of a 7.2 rc battery probably not fully charged.

All 10 are in parallel with roughly a 25ohm resistor, providing roughly 2 volts to each led.

The problem with our cup holders compared to the rest of the world, is that ours is a rectangle with the rolltop cover. The rest of the world has two distinct circles.

What I would do, Windy Road, is similar to those DIY Angel Eye things. Get a clear curtain rod thingie, and heat it up. Bend it to shape (make a template first), cut some grooves in it, put some reflective tape on the backside of it, and hot glue it into the cup holder. You could probably work the rod so it disappears somehow, and that's where the LEDs would hide.

This video might help you out:

See thats basically what I'm doing though instead of having it on the inside of the cup holder it will be flush mounted like the rest of the worlds. I'll see if I can find a cheap cup holder on ebay to cut up and go from there.

ahh i see what you're gonna do. If that's the case you might be able to fabricate a middle area that will divide it in to two separate cup holders. then making those angel eye type things might be a better solution.

it's just annoying that we can't use the non-USDM cup holders

Hi,

i'm asking a intrest of these acrylic rings, if i made em, those would cost around 15-20$ with shipping to the whole world from a pair. How many would be intrested about these? Fits to the models from 06-09 i think, not sure about 2010 models.

Not sure they would fit USDM Legacy/Outback cupholder. If they do, I would buy a pair for the price you indicated.

I just looked on the site and I don't see them anywhere. If they don't have them you'll have to dremel down regular LEDs.

I tapped off the cigarette adapter for my ground, and the purple striped (to si-drive) for my power. I *thought* that wire dimmed with the interior lights, but it doesn't. Double check everything with a meter, though.

^ yup. the one in the center console.

The LEDs I bought had screws that screwed onto the back of them, you can see in the pic i posted above.

If you can't get those LEDs, hot glue would work the best.

Boy I'm an idiot. The LED's I used actually are still sold by Radio Shack. They're right here: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062568

It doesn't list the specs so I can't compare it to the ones you linked. But personally, I'd rather have a dim light since it's really just accent lighting. I have four in there and it's plenty bright.

Looking closely at the 06 USDM I don't see a clean way to put rings in it, unless you remove the sliding lid, or want to reduce the diameter of the drink holes.

So I may have to try just the LEDs, but I'm concerned with them being bright enough to work, yet not so bright as to be distracting.

While I'm in there, I'll put LEDs in the inside lid of the arm rest- there is a perfect place behind the latch so they light up the storage area when the lid is up. I might even put in a contact switch, but only if you can tell the LEDs are on when the lid is closed.

Unless that looks cool too......
