Superman10
I'm investing in a 2006 Legacy 2.5i. It's a manual transmission, and I'm particularly interested in your experiences with this transmission. I have only 1000 or so miles of manual experience, so I am a newbie. What should I expect? Is there a lot of notichiness? Does the car jerk a lot when you shift? Thanks in advance.
Osei
Any jerkiness is yours. Once you get used to clutch engagement, it will disappear. Notchiness, sadly it is part of the breeding. When time for a diff fluid change, go synthetic. It will make it smoother. You can also invest in a short shifter, either Kartboy or Cobb are very good. Other good ones also, but they come to mind first. It will smooth a little once you get past 20K(if you're not already there). Forget high rev clutch drops. All you'll get is a lot of clutch stink. Welcome. Learn to search, it will save you a ton of wisecracks. Have fun. O.

But does it help with the notchiness? Does it make shifting any easier?
racerbynight573
short shifter wont change the notchiness but its really not that bad....ill learned stick on 06 legacy and idk if its just the legacy or all awd cars but when you stall em they buck pretty hard....just be ready once you get it down youll love it! They all buck. I learned stick on an '06 Civic Si (six speed). Didn't get to master it before winter rolled around and I took it off the road. Now that I got the Legacy, I'm going to sell the Si. I love the car, but the transmission annoyed the crap out of me. They have well known 3rd gear issues, and it was VERY notchy.
Kelvrick
I'm told I could have had an easier time learning to drive manual then in my 06 wagon, but otherwise, its great now. Other drivers sometimes have some trouble because of the vague feel and engagement point but they learn it well enough. Made a vow only to upgrade to performance parts when parts go bad and I've only broken that once. The short shifter and shifter bushings. I did it in one go so I consider it once. Otherwise looking forward to an upgraded clutch/flywheel and eventually when my shocks go out a suspension upgrade. My Outback
Osei
To Kelvrick: Why go to upgraded clutch and flywheel? You'll never be able to stress a standard clutch etc at your power levels, unless you just want to do high rev clutch drops. O.
hakgwai
the Legacy isnt that hard to learn manual. i learnt manual on the car. 2 hrs in a traffic jam and after that u'll be a pro
vr4Legacy
2 hrs in a traffic jam and after that u'll be a pro ... with a sore left leg. I have driven a manual for a several years, but not around a lot traffic jams.... they still kill my leg, I don't know how you guys do it all the time. I wouldn't sacrifice the MT either, I guess I would have to condition my legs a little more I considered myself an experience MT driver when I bought my first MT AWD, a '91 Mitsubishi Galant-VR4, very similar to the impreza, turbo, AWD, size, wieght.... and I had some trouble adjusting. Once I got used to that, moving to a Subaru wasn't much of a change. I have always had trouble with Reverse though, I guess that's common too. Sometimes i need to let it roll a little to engage. Best of luck and ENJOY!!!
ehsnils
Considering all the farm equipment I did drive before I got my license any MT car is easy. OK - I haven't tried any supercars...

I didn't mean an upgraded clutch as in something required to handle the power. Flywheel is kind of the same concept, not to handle more power, but a lighter one. EDIT: I guess I should also research if we use the same ones as our lgt siblings before opening my mouth, but thats what I want. Bdubs
I'm thinking about getting a group-n transmission mount to solve my wobble issues. Stop and go driving makes it feel as if the damn 5mt is gonna drop out of the car sometimes if you shift to quickly. Never had any other issues or concerns other than that. Pawlwawl06
Great! lol What's that all about? When you accelerate, it feels like you are doing a wheelie lol. For example, when I accelerate in 1st gear, the front end of the car feels like its going to lift up off the ground, but when I hit the clutch, the car dives back down. Its really annoying, the most annoying thing about our 2.5i cars in my opinion. Some stiffer aftermarket springs/struts can get rid of that though. Yes, its hardly a problem at all. I couldn't have bought a better car for my first ride! I'm absolutely loving it.

Superman10
Ok, now I'm not sure what you mean by that How fast do the RPMs drop? My previous car had "rev hang" where, the RPMs dropped too slowly, forcing you to shift slower.

Oh ok, got ya. They drop pretty quickly in my opinion, I have no problem when I'm rowing through the gears. This is my first 5MT though, so I can't really compare it to anything.
