iuksob03 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Never seen this happen to one of the stock rims, but here it is. Hit a curb at about 5-10 mph in the dark Friday night in a parking lot, which happened to flatten one of my 5 week old toyo's. I walked home in the rain from the restaurant (just down the street) and figured I'd deal with it in the morning. Got the car up and the wheel off and found I would be needing a new rim as well. The thing cracked about 3/4 of the way around. Luckily I had an extra set of stock rims at home.
ShadowImg Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I've seen it happen to an awful lot of wheels at "5-10 mph" -- typically that's some sort of odd standard measurement which in normal terms equates to about 25-30mph Edit: BTW, with enough force to do that, you'll definitely want to look at all the connecting parts of the suspension to that wheel. Unusual force can cause the wheel to break by itself like that, but it's entirely possible you also broke more.
c-lo Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 damn! that won't buff out! 258k miles - Stock engine/minor suspension upgrades/original shocks/rear struts replaced at 222k/4 passenger side wheel bearings/3 clutches/1 radiator/3 turbos
iuksob03 Posted October 28, 2008 Author Posted October 28, 2008 As bad as it looks, seriously only 5-10 mph. My girlfriend yelled right before I hit it and I think I may have had the wheel turned a slight bit when I hit and rode over. There was a huge gash in the sidewall of the tire by where it meets the rim.
ordiga Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Damn, I can't believe thats a stock rim. I shattered and split a rim in two pieces (technically more but two large pieces) but it was a cheapo tire rack rim so it was kinda explained...and it was a big pothole...but yeah, to a stock rim...damn. That curb meant business...definitely wasn't here to play...
leggtnut Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 You faught the curb...and the curb won. Ben (2014 Outback SAP w/ eyesite, 2014 Tribeca Limited, 2006 LGT limited sedan) Subaru Ambassador PNW
Opie Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Funny story regarding curbs and cars... Several years ago I was hanging out in a parking lot with some friends talking cars, there was a kid that pulled up in his new Integra Type-R (wheels + fart can) bragging, reving and trying to get us to race him. After being ignored by us he took off up the row in the parking lot, got to the end and turned around coming down the next row downshifting and really flying....not realizing the row ended abruptly into an empty retention pond. At the last second he realized the curb was there...but it was too late, slammed on the brakes, hit the curb at about 40mph I'd guess, went airborne and landed about 25 - 30 feet into the empty pond. Ripped the bumper off, bent the core support, bent both front wheels, cracked the oil pan and who knows what else. Funniest thing I've ever seen...
ShadowImg Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 ^ Pics or it didn't happen. Not that I believe it didn't happen, I just really want to see pictures.
Denver133 Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 HAHAHA Great story opie. I sure wouldnt want to be the guy to buy that one from him. LOL
Opie Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I wish I had gotten pictures! It happened so fast we weren't even thinking of taking pictures...video would've won funniest home videos!
Mocny1 Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 make sure you go get an alignment. Even 5-10mph can push it out.
Backlash Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Stock rim.... wow. i'd believe it from an aftermarket rim being so lightweight... but a stock rim is normally built like a tank.
LGTfoLIFE Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 wow...that can happen with just hitting the curb!
Shainz Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I've never seen that kind of damage to a rim before.... unless of course it was a high speed accident. Thats crazy.
