AlexD Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 So I went for a drive on Saturday, up to southwest VA for the day. As I was driving up there I had a little "incident" with my car. I was on the interstate and it opened up to 3 lanes, with the center and right lanes being truck lanes (we were going up a hill). As usual, there was a truck in the center lane and some dumbass in the left lane going like 67mph. So I downshifted, swung over to the far right lane and blew past everyone. I had the gas to the floor and was going maybe 80mph. However, as I did so I heard a "pop" (maybe like a muted backfire) and felt the car buck. It felt like an exaggerated stutter that our cars are so well known for. As soon as all this happened all kinds of lights came on on the dash board. The traction control light and the check engine light both came on. The cruise control light started blinking, and the "S" in the SI-DRIVE display started blinking. I had previously been in S# mode. The car continued to drive fine. I made a couple of stops and each time I started the car it came right to life, but all the warning lights were on or blinking, and the car wouldn't go into any mode other than "S". Then, upon starting the car after lunch I found that all the warning lights had gone off and everything was back to normal. I got back home that evening and hooked up my AccessPort. There was an error logged that said something like "Turbo bypass valve solenoid A parameters exceeded." I cleared the code and everything been's fine since. My car is Stage 2, by the way, and I'm running the stock Cobb stage 2 map. Anyone experience anything like this? Is there any way I can prevent this from happening in the future (aside from not driving the car fast)? Thanks.
rao Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Sounds like you hit boost cut. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
AlexD Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 So, not being all that mechanically savvy, I presume that "boost cut" means the boost level got too high so the engine cut it? Is that a symptom of some other problem, or is it just a "feature" of the stage 2 map from Cobb?
rao Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 It is a feature of nailing it on the hgihway on a cool day It means that boost ran above the maximum limit so the ecu shut it down. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
AlexD Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 Thank you sir. Yes, it was a nice cool day...the kind of days turbos really love!

vr4Legacy Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 were you by any chance heading north on I-77 in SW-VA?? If so I know exactly where you are talking about and LOVE that hill, but hate the dumba$$ your talking about too but it sure is fun passing them I used to live in NC and would drive it many a time heading home to WV.....
AlexD Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 Nope, I was still in Tennessee at the time, on I-81. I exited 81 on exit 35 in VA, before I got to I-77. Ironically enough, the car did the same thing again on my drive home from work. I hope this doesn't be come *that* common an occurrence.
Throttlejockey Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 Until they hit boost cut How did that happen with a conservative map like the Cobb stage 2?
rao Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 It's a spec B - it makes MaD BooST It sounds like either the wastegate solenoid control is a little off (it is not controlling boost as well as it should) or the boost cut limit is set a little too low. It is probably the WDC table - there is some variation between cars. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
Max Capacity Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 If it happens again, you can fix the flashing lights by turning the car off and back on 4 times. If your good you can do it while driving. Happened to me a few times when I had a MBC. 1st and 2nd were fine but to much time in 3rd and it would throw the CEL and buck. That was 70,000 miles ago. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Engine Build - Click Here
05BlackLGT Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 Guys its a good thing...its a safety feature
Soda Popinski Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 I was getting this after I put my invidia downpipe on. The divorced wall of the downpipe was blocking the wastegate arm from opening and sounded like a penny in the exhaust pipe. After notching it with a dremel tool, it worked fine. But I hope you have some kind of tool to reset that ecu, otherwise the dealer might charge you.
AlexD Posted October 23, 2008 Author Posted October 23, 2008 I'm hoping I can find a way to make this stop happening...I can reset the ECU and clear the codes with the accessport, so I don't have to worry about the dealership in that regard. My car is there right now, as a matter of fact. They are replacing the ECU because the air conditioning doesn't work. I'm not convinced that the two are that intimately related, but my warranty is paying for it, so I won't argue. Maybe the new ECU will have a higher boost cut limit.
mwiener2 Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 If you are stock, this shouldn't be happening. Take it to the dealer and let them deal with it under warranty. If you are stage 1 or 2, then you may need to get a protune to prevent this from happening. My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
AlexD Posted October 23, 2008 Author Posted October 23, 2008 Currently stage 2. A protune is next on my list of things to do. It's just a matter of finding the time to make a trip down to ATL to the TopSpeed shop to have them do it.
AlexD Posted October 27, 2008 Author Posted October 27, 2008 So I checked Cobb's website, and it turns out that they have an updated Stage 2 map that addresses the very issue I was having. I uploaded the new map to my car and didn't have any trouble on a 500 mile drive I took on Friday.
rao Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Glad to hear it Cobb's maps are generally very good. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
