foolds Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 For you Colorado guys that have to pass the envirotest, do you run catted or uncatted DP's? I'm thinking about going stage 2 and am really trying to decide what the best way to do it is. I have a 05 5eat wagon.
enthusiast Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 If you go for the test you will fail the visual test period. As far as the smog test I am pretty sure you will fail that as well. Just get the catted DP but, be prepared to put on your stock DP when you go for the test. They are getting stricter every year. My mod list
collegemt Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 if your car was brand new, I would say go catless, since you have 4 years before you need a emmisons test. Since you have a 05, a emmisons test should be due pretty soon, so I would recomend a catted downpipe. With a catted downpipe, you will pass the roadside emmsions tests.
enthusiast Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 The roadside tests are more stringent than the regular test facilities are. There are more and more people failing with just one cat. If you want to read more about it check out the thread over at AWDPirates. Just keep your stock DP and when you have to go in for your test just put it on and you will pass no problems. My mod list

Can you post a Link? Catted DP would be pretty much useless if it can't pass the emission test. Just keep your stock DP and when you have to go in for your test just put it on and you will pass no problems. +1. It's ~1/2 hr job on the LGT. I do the same thing on my Z every 2 years.
foolds Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 I drive right past the road side trucks at least 2 times a week. my office is right by one of there favorite spots to hang out. I have about 1.8 years before I have to pass e-test again.

I have about 1.8 years before I have to pass e-test again. They passed a new law that allows the road side test vans to flag cars that fail the test. They will send you a summon to come in for testing if you get flagged by the van, even if it's not yet time for your emission test.
dudeondacouch Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 :confused:You guys have vans on the side of the road that scan your emissions?:eek: WHAT?!?!?
chenc544 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 ^Yup. http://www.aircarecolorado.com/rapidscreen/about.html
foolds Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 Will I fail the road side, if I have catted dp but non catted up?
chenc544 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 The cat in the UP does it's thing during cold startup. Once the engine warms up the cat in the UP really doesn't help much. The stock DP has 2 cats but high flow aftermarket DP usually only has one cat. From what enthusiast is saying people are seeing one cat aftermarket DP failing the emission test. I haven't read the awdpirate threads that enthusiast is referring to, but if you are are worrying about DP's then you should probably look them up.
enthusiast Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Here is the thread starting at page 5 with people failing the roadside and station emissions testing. Sounds like you need to drive by the vans low idle and out of boost. Most ppl are just switching back to stock then driving by or taking it in. My mod list
bsdzine Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 ^ and from what I can remember, don't put your car in neutral and coast pass the emissions van either. A good old take your foot off the gas is better. (right?) brian
chenc544 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 ^yup, as long as your rpm is above idle or higher to be safe. Coasting in gear means you are not burning gas, no gas equals no emission.
johnAWD Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 You will not pass with a catless downpipe. Don't even try.
ParkerGTL Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 Both our cars have been through the drive by test many times and have never been notified of failure, the 05 STi is up for its sticker next year (will have had for 5 year at that point) and will see what happens. The 05 GT will be due in 2010. STi has a catted MRT turbo back and the GT is running a catted Cobb down pipe rest is stock exhaust. Catted pipes made right don't cost enough power that you'll ever notice, but if you want attention then go catless. Parker
