JoeFromPA Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Hi all, Washed the 08 LGT SWP yesterday. Found my first big-arse paint chip on the hood...it's about the size of 4-5 pin heads of just missing paint and bare metal underneath. I was wondering if anyone has used the Subaru Paint Pen? Does it do a fine job of filling in without creating a "bubble" of paint? Joe
Regal05LGT Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 It fills nicely, but the color match sucks in my experience
urs1ne Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I have a big gash in the hood I am still trying to figure out what I will do ^ n00bs below this line
Regal05LGT Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 You can't notice the touch ups until you are close to the car, looks good from a distance, but def can tell the color isn't 100% once you're up close
bdisco Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 http://www.dabnsmear.com/Default.asp?bhcp=1 After 30k miles my WRX looked like it had been towed behind a dumptruck down a gravel road and my Legacy is not much better. What makes a Subaru a Subaru...
katalyst Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 does that dab n smear work? haha yeah i wonder too..........the whole "as seen on tv" deal makes me feel like it's a sham. i have some rust appearing on my trunk liner that i just noticed like 2 weeks ago, what's the best way to take off the rust before applying touch up paint?
timbo7 Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 i have a big chip on my rear quarter panel. which one of these products work?

Does it do a fine job of filling in without creating a "bubble" of paint? Joe I've had good luck with the Subaru touch-up paint. It's a lot of work to get right, but when you do, the chip is nearly invisible, even up close. My results have been better with the DGM than with ABP. Ich bin echt viel netter, wenn ich nuechtern bin. Echt!
bdisco Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Use Tooth pic do not use pen or brush unless you like blobs.
JoeFromPA Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 As in dip edge of toothpick in paint (or brush paint on edge of toothpick) and then touch toothpick to chip until filled in....and it may take multiple coats? Joe
Montana Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 The Sub touch up comes with a dual tip, one is like a ballpoint and one is a brush. I've always had a lot of success with the brush, but I've used them a lot (lots of gravel here, no salt in the winter). Just clean the spot well (no loose flakes), wipe the spot with alcohol (acts as a degreaser), let dry, wipe the brush on the side of the touch up paint barrel so it has hardly any paint on it and what is on it is at the tip, then touch the spot and sort of move it a bit to "fill in" the area. You're not really painting and you use only the brush tips, just get a thin layer down and try to get it to touch the sides all around, so it seals the spot. If it seems to be a divot (typical), give it a day or two, then do the alcohol wipe and touch up again. I've never bothered to follow up with a clear coat, although there usually is one in the same kind of touch up container. If you have a girlfriend or wife who paints her nails, ask her to show you some fingernail paint repair tricks, it's sort of the same.
DukeTrout Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I actually go ahead and overfill in 2-3 coats, then use very mild polishing compound to blend it back in with the neighboring paint. You will not be able to find the edges this way, even with angled light, but sometimes you get a slight difference in color if you don't mix the paint enough beforehand. Ich bin echt viel netter, wenn ich nuechtern bin. Echt!
FSRBIKER Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 These two products are very good for touch-ups:http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1824&itemType=PRODUCThttp://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1821&itemType=PRODUCT
