RHL Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I have been noticing this problem with my 2007 GT, after an oil change and tire rotation last month. I've notice vibration on the steering wheel when i go past 60 mph...and it gets worst when I go at higher speed. At first i thought maybe it is un even highway roads since i live in NYC, but its not the case. Any Idea what it might be? bad tires? bent rims? any advice would be greatly appreciated. RHL
FishingFiend Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I would guess your wheel is out of balance if this only happens while cruising or accelerating. If the vibration is while braking, then the first thought is pad build up on the rotors which is common.
Dergara Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 All of the above. Method of elimination. Severely warped rotors can cause this. You would feel vibration and steering wheel shake braking from 60 mph fast. Feathered tire wear from poor balancing. It hard to find but find someone who has a good balancing machine. Any steering wheel wobble at 50 mph is probably balancing. Bad Alignment. Car would pull to one side on even flat pavement. Try different roads. Bent rim. You could see it. “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here” -Dante Alighieri http://youtu.be/lLFunBPgPOo
RHL Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Thanks guys for the quick repsonse. I will have to inspect my rims again just to make sure. The steering wheel does not wobble when i brake so it cant be the rotors. Quite possibly the balancing. The dealer probably didnt do proper job of rotating the tires when I brought it in for the scheduled 10,000 mile inspection. I will bring it in again and have them inspect it...any good subaru dealerships recommended in the Queens/Brooklyn nyc area? or subaru specialists? Thanks, RHL
Dergara Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Also, you should have no weights on the outside. Only inside the wheel Stick On and such. “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here” -Dante Alighieri http://youtu.be/lLFunBPgPOo
c-lo Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 sounds like balancing. could be a bent rim. I just had my tires rotated and had to have them put back. appears i bent a rim. not real bad, but bad enough to cause the same problem you had. bent wheel is on the back for now and car handles great. will probably pick up another wheel after winter. 258k miles - Stock engine/minor suspension upgrades/original shocks/rear struts replaced at 222k/4 passenger side wheel bearings/3 clutches/1 radiator/3 turbos
RHL Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 I am hoping this is a balancing issue and have them correct it. I will be bringing the car in soon to the service dept. A bent rim means that i will have to get a new one...which sucks, because they are so expensive. Thanks for the advice guys... RHL
blackfang Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 It could be a tire balance issue or warped rotors(usually from where a shop overtorques the lugnuts).
