08Flo Rida Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 After having a huge sub box in my trunk for a few months I decided that I needed to get rid of it. I contemplated making a fiberglass enclosure on the passenger side of the trunk, but I opted not to attempt one. Instead I made a box in the spare tire well. I owe credit to the pioneers of this idea because I love it, and all the trunk space I gained. I am not sure if there is a walk thru on this so i took a handful of pictures. All and all my afternoon project went quite well. I ended up spending about $70 including a new skill saw. If anyone has any questions hit me up.
ean611 Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Looks awesome!!! What do you have for amps? Where are you hiding them? What speakers are you using? Etc? I was thinking of doing that, but after installing my amps in that location, went ahead with side subs. (finishing them this weekend, I hope)
ItalynStylion Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Excellent workmanship my friend....imitation is the ultimate flattery:wub:
ItalynStylion Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 What did you use for the bottom part that sits in the wheel?? Did you just use a bunch of pieces of MDF to simulate a cylinder?
08Flo Rida Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 I think the next thing will be to add the same felt material to the liner of my trunk to make it look clean. As far as the space between the spare tire well and the box, i don't know what to fill it with. Any ideas would be a great filler. My amp is mounted on the back of the seat so it's not to well hidden. The box below the top shelf is just a square box. The best shape I found was a 19" x 20". The box is 8 3/4" tall, however the top has two layers of 3/4 mdf. One to mount the sub and the other to recess it 3/4". The picture below show how I made the appearance a little larger just to cover the spare tire well. Personal I think it just help a bit cosmetically and it helps protect the sub a bit.
ItalynStylion Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Cool! The one I made was designed to actually fit inside the spare tire. I guess in your case, if you were willing to give up the spare, you could have a lot more airspace to work with.
08Flo Rida Posted September 13, 2008 Author Posted September 13, 2008 I got rid of the spare because most of my driving is in town so I am not worried about be stranded without a spare. I was going to make the box larger but the amount of valume was just about perfect for my sub. I was quite pleased. Maybe my next project will be to try and make an enclosure that lets me still use the spare.
dragonman586 Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Does it vibrate around in that spare tire area? Do you have anything in place to keep it from moving around?
08Flo Rida Posted September 14, 2008 Author Posted September 14, 2008 I have actually notices less vibration with this box verses my prior box. I haven't had any problems with it moving around. However I eventually will anchor it is some how. Any suggestions?
ItalynStylion Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 http://greatstuff.dow.com/greatstuff/images/greatstuff3.jpg I would use painters tape or some type of liner to line the inside of the spare tire well. Then, spray some of that in there around the box and underneath it. It expands so watch out; don't use too much. Then when it dries it should make a tight fit and keep it snug. If you line the spare tire well like I said you will be able to pull the whole thing out like a mold after it all dries.
