Potential Legacy Owner

Whats up fellas, glad I found this site.

Here's the deal: I'm looking around at new cars and have probably at most $18k to spend. I love these Legacy's but probably wont be able to get a GT, so probably will have to go for a 2.5. Whatever, I'm in college and with gas at $4.20 a gallon, I'll save some cheddar not ripping around in a GT.

Does anyone have any information or just some positive word regarding Legacy's? I'm still figuring out the top few cars I'll be test driving shortly, and the Legacy is atop the list for now, with an 03-04 Audi A4 and a 03 TL type S right near it too. I just like these Legacy's though, but I probably won't be able to find a GT...

Does anyone have any pictures of some reasonably stock 2.5's? Thats what I'm looking at and will have about $1000 when I buy a car to put some aftermarket stuff on. Tint and HID's are atop the list, wouldn't mind either getting stock rims painted darker or some slightly tinted rear tail lights....

Thanks fellas, and what about durability of these rides?

I don't understand where you are coming from.

You say you are considering a 2.5i because of the price of fuel .... but also looking at an A4 or TL Type S. These are 3 totally different cars. One non-turbo AWD, one turbo AWD, one non-turbo FWD.

I suggest you get a bit of time behind the wheel of the cars you are interested in. No offence to the 2.5i owners .... but it has nowhere near the power of the GT. There are a number of used cars in your price range on the forum here.

As for the LGT over the Audi .... most definitely. The LGT has many more options for mods, better reliability ratings, less expensive to repair .....

The Acura is a totally different car in that it is FWD. Yes there are some options to mod. Very nice car just nothing like the LGT.

As far as modding the LGT here is a link.

+1 ...... You really ought to test drive the mentioned vehicles as they're all different. IMHO if you're persistent and patient at looking/searching in the right places, I think you can buy an lgt near your mentioned 18k$ As for the 2.5i it works fine for us and I plan to keep her up for the duration......Best of luck to you......Peace

Good luck.

I do know that the three cars I am looking at are very different. The 1.8 A4's aren't bad on gas and the TL Type S's aren't either, but they both take Premium, as would the LGT. Don't get me wrong I would love to find a GT, but am having trouble seeing them for sale anywhere near my state. I'm on a college budget.....

I know the Acura is FWD car, and I'm still unsure if I need a 4wd car. My mom has an 07 Acura RL (AWD) and dad a 07 Tahoe 4wd, but I will have this car for the most of the year in a different state and will need 4wd probably no more then 3 times per year. If I was back in Washington and going up skiing in the mountains more, near a dozen times per year I would have to get a AWD/4WD car, but I used to just take my dads old 03 Sequoia.

I'll look around the classifieds, but I'm pretty sure my dad and I would like to get one from a dealership to get a warranty on it. I am not considering the 2.5 just for saving gas, but also cause I can't find any GT's in my price range in my state.

As for the modding, the most I would do at first would be exhaust/intake....I'd start with just cosmetic stuff like tint and HID kit, and when I make more money this summer, put more $$$ into it and get some performance stuff like the exhaust/intake and what not. I'm in college so the money tree for me isn't exactly blooming unfortunately.

Good luck.

As for the 3 very different cars, yes, I'm not completely sure what I want yet. These three "lookswise" are on the top of my list.

But 1.8t's are pretty decent on gas and even 03 TL type S's aren't too bad.

I'm still trying to figure out if I need AWD....

My permanent residence is in WA and I do a lot of skiing up there, but now I'm gone at college for 8-9 months outta the year in California and I would only head to Tahoe to ski once or twice per winter....If I was back in WA, I usually take my dads 07 Tahoe to the mountains a dozen times per year to the mountains to ski.

I don't really feel the need to get a super fast car. My last car was a 00 Accord, I-4. It would just get me into tickets if I had something that was pretty fast. And with gas as it is and me on a college budget, well it would hurt the piggy bank... I'm only considering the TL Type S because they look a lot better then the regular TL.

My other issue is that I don't have a ton of money to buy a car (18k) and there are very few GT's for sale in my area. There's only one here right now and its an 05 GT, Silver, automatic with 50k miles. I'm trying to find something with low miles and would like an 06 or 07 Legacy. A 2.5 seems to be fine enough for me

I'll test drive them all for sure.

FWIW, as a college student… unless you have a reasonably liquid amount of cash, skip the Audi.

One simple repair can do you in. Unless there is a warrant you should def look elsewhere.

You're on a college budget but willing to spend $18k for a car and $1k in mods?

I'm getting a lot of help paying for the car, selling some of my stocks as well and any of the mods I make are coming straight outta my pocket...

I get $15 to work with, anything over is outta my pocket...

I'll initially put $1k into it in mods, most likely tint, HID kit and either an intake or powdercoat the wheels....Depending on how much money I make this summer, I might start putting some other stuff into it....

I checked Autotrader and saw several Legacy GT's for less than $20k. Spend the extra $1k in mods and upgrade to the GT instead.

^ agreed, HID (if you REALLY even need it) is $120, you can make that in a semester, save the 1k and put it towards gas (the 1k difference might last you two years, gas mileage vs 2.5i)

I found an 05 GT for like $16,950. Silver, 05, automatic, 50k miles.

I want an automatic so this seems like a good car, but should the 50K miles be something to be concerned about with Subarus? I've not have any experience with Subaru's yet, have had Acura/Honda/Toyota's in the family though, all with good experience....I'm thinking Subaru, being Japanese, is the same???

If you want a reliable car with an automatic transmission just get yourself a Camry.

My '05 LGT turned out to be a lemon car after a few months. Towed 4 separate occassions. I had the option of getting my down payment back or using it toward an '06 LGT. I went with the Legacy GT again. It was well worth it. Nearly 30,000 miles now and no problems.

Point is, the reason I went with Subaru is because of AWD, turbo, and fun to drive factor, grown up STI type of car. On the whole, Subaru's reliability is better than average. I just had bad luck with the '05.

I can't stand the looks of the Camry's. I've also heard it's worth looking for an 06 or 07...First year cars seem to always be subject to some flaws...

I just purchased an 05 and it has been fine so far.

That said, if I had a little more money I would have went with an 06 for 2 reasons:

1. Turbo part number changed in 06... supposedly is more reliable

2. CD deck is mp3-compatible 06+. (mp3's burned to CD's, no aux-in)

I'd highly suggest doing a long extended test-drive in about 4-5 vehicles you're considering. See how you like them light-to-light, on the highway, etc.

I really like the LGT, but the lack of low-end torque sort of makes me regret not getting a 6cyl+. Also, for some people a luxury name/look is important.

You just have to decide if you'll be happy walking out to your car every day.
