PRoJeKGT Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I'm really looking into buying a 2005 Legacy GT. I'm trying to find one in the under $16k range, but that seriously hinders the chances of finding one with any type of warranty left. Are there big ticket items that would be going out at around 70k miles? I know that when I bought my Passat, the ABS computer module died w/in a few months and cost me $1200 alone for the part. That would suck if something similar happened, especially when I could just pony up a couple extra grand to look for LGTs with a warranty. I've tried searching, perhaps not hard enough. I'm going to read through the "buyer remorse" thread and a few others I found, but that'll take hours, which I don't have right now, as I should be writing my papers (graduate from college on Sunday, and this is going to be my present to myself ). So the question is: Should I just spend a few more thousand and look for LGTs with lower mileage and a warranty or can I find a good deal for $15k and have piece of mind that I'll only have to pay for regular maintenance. Thanks all! -Joseph (Future LGT owner)
mars_volta Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 fwiw, i just bought a 05 lgt with 67,000 for $16,000. i bought a 2 year, 24,000 subaru classic warranty for $1400. like you i am concerned about that 1 incident that could cost a lot of $$. its a very clean car but you never know. chances are i wont have any trouble. most warranties can be cancelled and youll get at least a pro rated refund.
Opie Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Just buy a very-well maintained GT...like mine: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88211 Whatever car you get, if you are worried there are several good aftermarket warranties available.
PRoJeKGT Posted May 18, 2008 Author Posted May 18, 2008 I appreciate the replies. Opie, I'd consider your car if you weren't so far. I'm not sure how I feel about shipping something I haven't seen in person. Maybe for the right price I'd fly out and drive back since I'm done with school and haven't gotten a chance to road trip yet .
odenheimer Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 PRoJeKGT I have a silver 05 LGT manual with 33,000 miles. I bought it new in Aug 04. It has been a great car, with the "05 issues" having been taken care of. I had a new clutch put in at 10,000 miles (bad throw-out bearing), which seemed to fix the nasty smell, and the ECU reflash, which seemed to fix the 2500 rpm stutter. I bought the 7 year/100,000 mile tranferrable warranty when it was new. It has been a very fun car. I have been putting in Mobil 1 full synthetic since I went through the proper break-in procedures (that was hard to do). The only options I had installed were the spoiler and butt woofer. Because of the warranty, the brand new BFG Sport T/As, and the low miles, I would have to get at least $18,000 for it. She was my first new car and she has been pampered. I am currently deployed to Iraq, so I cannot sell it until I return sometime in early August. I am looking at a new G35 as a reward for enduring another deployment (I bought the LGT after my forst deployment). Congrats on graduating from college and good luck in your car search. I am in So Cal...

Thank you for serving for us. http://www.passatworld.com/smilies/salute.gif I will keep your car in mind on my search, but honestly the distance may be a problem, although the warranty is a plus. I too would like to know what the 2005 issues are, if any, besides the ones you listed.
