Whistling past graveyards and other places(squeeling rear brakes)

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow Subie dudes. I have a couple problems with our 2000 LGT. This is primarily my wife's car and has been generally lightly used showing only 85K for its 8 years. It is a automatic trans equiped ca which we have owned since new (had 89 miles on it from a dealer trade trip) I say lightly used but it has been rearended twice and has totaled the Oldsmobile and the Toyota that had the poor sense to run into it. After both these strikes the car was repaired using the original impact absorber.

1) Any way a problem which exists is that the rear brakes begin to squeel after about 15 minutes of driving. The complete system on both sides have been replaced, reman calipers, with new mounting hardware, new style shims, new decent after market rotors, new flex hoses, and new semi ceramic ( I believe the other part is used charcoal birquettes) pads. The squeel occurs with the brakes off. Applying the brakes silences them for a bit as will swerving in lane like a racer warming tires. But after a couple minutes the high pitched whistling comes back. The dealer of course can't duplicate or hear the problem.

Any Ideas how to address this???

2) Since about 1000 miles the car scallops the drivers side rear tire. The alignment has been checked os OK, by the dealer and a couple independent shops, I replaced the wheel thinking the rim was bent. With a new tire on the new (used rim) the corner was quiet, but the condition has returned. It sounds like a wheel bearing but the sound had been the same and constistant for 85K. The dealer can not find a problem. The car has been checked for axle runout and is supposedly OK. The dealer suggests I rotate the tires more often. My answer is why should I scallop more than 1 tire????

3) Check engine light. When I drive the car, I use it a bit more than my wife does. Invariable after a brisk acceleration or two the CE light illuminates. Usually the codes are related to the O2 sensor circuit. After about 2 or three day of my wife driving the car the CE light goes off. So I guess the car is allergic to me. The O2 sensors hae been changed about 4 times. When I asked the dealer if it had been flashed to broaden the O2 perameters the dealer says my Vin is not in the effected group.

Codes are P 0103 and P 1130. The TSB I cited was WWF-89, the Vin is Y7201113. I also found a TSB WXW 80 but can't seem to find it again. Might have been to reteach the tranny to shift better between 1st and 2nd.

Any ideas from you Legacy Gurus regarding any fixes for these items. The brake deal is the most irritating. I can live with the car not liking how I drive it as long as it doesn't throw a CE light close to inspection time. Here in NY it is an auto fail for an OBD II car to show up with the light on.

Any suggested would be appreciated.
