Soda Popinski
Edit: 2008 Legacy GT (subject line) I've done my searches already in this forum, but I still have a few questions because this is my first modification of this magnititude. I like the way the SPT intakes and exhausts sound, so I went to subaruproparts.com and compared the prices to what the dealership wanted, and so far I'm down about $1,000 less than what the dealership's parts department wanted. I also found a few items that don't show up in the dealership's parts book. Namely the catless uppipe. Here's what I plan to purchase and install: SPT High Flow Intake (SOA8431010) - $170 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/spt-intake.jpg SPT High Flow Intake Heat Shield (SOA8431040) - $75 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/heatshield.jpg STi Catless UpPipe (44104FE090) - $260 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/sti-uppipe.jpg SPT Performance Exhaust -$999 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/SPTexhaust.jpg Exhaust Gasket - Headers to UpPipe (44022AA170) - $11 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/headerup-gasket_440022AA170.jpg Exhaust Gasket - UpPipe to Turbo (440022AA150) - $11 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/upturbo-gasket_44022aa150.jpg ----------------- My questions are these: They don't list a downpipe. I tried searching for STi downpipe and found nothing (to match the set). Do I also need to replace the Turbo to Downpipe gasket? The Center of Downpipe Gasket? Exhaust Gasket - Turbo to DownPipe (440022AA180) - $17 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/turbodown-gasket_44022AA180.jpg Exhaust Gasket - Center of DownPipe (440022FE000) - $8 http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/cherrybloom203/legacy%20gt/downpipe_center-gasket_44011FE000.jpg Also: Am I missing something? I want to make sure that I have all the parts before ordering. I plan on doing this work myself, as I have the tools. However, I have never had to change out an exhaust and I'm taking extra pecautions. Any help would be great... I wanted to stick with the SPT line as much as possible, and everything I've found so far with searching lead to threads where people were more advanced into it than I am. Are these prices ok? Is the website subaruproparts.com legit? Thanks in advance... (extra smiley: )
DrCloud
The prevailing opinion here seems to be that the SPT intake ought not to be used, although the reasoning isn't fully documented. Partly, it appears that the Cobb AccessPort ECU tuning system doesn't support it (could it be that Cobb just wants to sell their own intakes?) because an SPT-intake-specific map isn't available. This is too bad, because I think that the combination has considerable potential -- add to that the exhaust components, and you'd have a serious Stage II indeed. I can't respond to your question about pricing, as I got my intake (plus short shifter and some other things) all packaged in the deal I made for my new Spec.B. The dealership installed everything, so it's all under warranty. HPH
rao
Cobb posted a detailed analysis of why the SPT intake is something you do not want on your car. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39773&highlight=spt Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
DrCloud
^^Cobb has reorganized their web site, and the link in that thread merely takes you to their home page. There's a discussion of intakes on their Tech page, but SPT is not mentioned specifically. The discussion centers mainly on mass airflow sensor inaccuracies due to design issues. Either they decided that specific criticism of SPT parts was unwise (perhaps for legal reasons) or they are talking about other, poorly designed intakes. Because they sell their own intake, it must be possible to overcome the design issues they talk about. That being the case, one wonders whether the newer SPT intakes may have also overcome their earlier problems. HPH
