Clunk while cornering - could be tranny???

Hi all,

This is my first post so thank you all beforehand, i've found a lot of valuable information just by searching, and since I'm in Mombasa, Kenya where good subaru dealers are in very short supply I don't see how I would have gotten it otherwise.

Today i took delivery of a 2002 Legacy GT (BH5) from Japan to replace my aged but loyal JDM 1990 Legacy RS and while testing noticed that there is a heavy clunking sound that comes only while turning in either direction with the steering close to full lock.

The clunk is heavy enough to vibrate the car when it happens. It is very similar to the sound and effect of a worn wheel bearing, however I checked all four and they seem to be good.

I'm sure its not the CVs, it sounds as though it is coming from the middle of the car.

I had a friend peek under the car while turning slowly and he said he noticed the tranny shuddering when the clunks came.

Any idea what it could be? I'm hoping I don't have to pull the tranny already :icon_frow

EDIT: BTW car has the 5Spd manual

thanks for the replies guys.

just to update. I also thought it might be the rear diff, got it out and took it apart and yes the teeth were worn and it was getting stuck while rotating so I swapped it for another unit (we're lucky here to have access to used JDM parts for very little $ :)).

The sound seemed to disappear at first but now it only happens when the car is driven for a while and now occurs even when going straight. If driven hard it comes up after about 5 minutes, takes longer if driven normally and disappears when the car is cold  .

After careful listening it starts with a vibration which seems to be coming from the rear which grows as you continue driving until the clunk starts (the clunk seems to be coming from the front.

The diff I put in is definately ok as I took it apart before I put it in and inspected it and the ratios must match as it has the same part number as the one i took out.

Now thinking it has to be the gearbox as well?

I've never had a problem quite like this before.

My rear diff broke because of mismatched tires; you can take a tape measure and make sure your tires are all the same circumference. just an idea. check engine mounts maybe tranny mount and stuff like that. I'm just guessing blindly though.
