John Sellers
I have purchased a 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon. I had allways heard that these are reliable cars. Mine is in very good condition for it's age with only 122k miles. I was very happy with my purchase until it failed the smog test here in California. Although it's running really well-it's dumping too much gas into the system and is a "gross polluter" here. There is a new cat, Idle control unit, new air filter, plugs, o2 sensor, Fuel pressure is spot on and temperature control is working correctly. I would very much like to keep the car but I need to pass the smog test to register it. ANY IDEAS???
whitetiger
can you monitor fuel trims on a 1990? what kind of readings are you getting from the up stream O2 sensor?

ehsnils
The question may be if the smog really is because it's running rich. It can also be a question of worn oil seals or oil rings. Another issue is also if the engine was warm enough when the test was done and that the cat actually had ignited. Measuring on a cold cat will get bad readings and it can take a while for it to heat up. It's important to follow the correct procedure when doing the emissions measurements and the correct procedure may depend on model year. Of course - the injectors may be fouled and not producing the correct mist. That's also a reason for the engine to foul up the measurements. And you will get a higher fuel consumption too.
