The correct way of fixing the dash rattle: TAKE IT APART!! (Took me 9 hours w/break)

just got mine apart. took two and a half hours of slow fun. the blue clip in the center has two push to releases one on each side. all three of them (two white and one blue) rattled like hell in the hole. also, all of my vent ducting attached to the underside of the dashboard rattled against other ducting parts. I will try to get some pics to explain that last one, but the rattles were at the center and drivers vents. i have to go and get an air filter while the glove box is out and some cloth tape to finish up.

also, about three or four clips broke on manufacture. dont get it. i got the car four months old used... dont know what else could have done it. those loose pieces were rattles as well.

I just used foam and double side tape. As of today, the car is still rattle free ever since I removed the dash. No need to add insulation or whatever. The foam type is just some soft foam from home depot. Actually, anything you find that can eliminate that "plastic against plastic" noise, you are good.

nope, just regular screw drivers

I don't remember correctly, but there aren't that many screws to hold up the gauge. As for the plastic cover, make sure you REMOVE the plastic cover, take it out from the top hole of the steering wheel, and then remove the gauge. The ENTIRE gauge including the plastic cover will NOT come out (I tried)

hope this helps. I did NOT regret taking it apart at all, and the car is STILL rattle free from the dash :)

Where do you live? Can I pay you to do this for me?

got it back together last night and drove it to work today. no rattles. you are the man witht his thread.

for the instrument cluster, once you remove the pieces under the steering column and the metal plate behind that, you can look up at the bottom of the instrument cluster and there are two small screws up there that go into the bottom of the cluster. after all three screws were out, I put a towel on the top of the column and pulled the cluster forward and disconnected the two wire harnesses on the back. this gave me enough room to move the cluster side to side to get the two screws out behind the cluster. I left the cluster sit there wrapped in an old t shirt until the dash was completely loose then lifted up on the dash to get the cluster out. make sure to protect the face while it is waiting for removal. i already had the vents and radio out before the cluster, so i had good access for moving it around. during installation, i set the dash in place then raised it up enough to get the cluster back in.

Thanks again for all the help this thread provided!!

Starhm:

Good to hear you got the rattles gone!! I did this back in 08, and the dash has been dead quiet since then!! The plugs in the firewall hole was the killer, and TSB did not address that.

jproy12:

Good luck man! But you won't regret with the result. Like the title said, taking it apart is the correct way of fixing it.

Now 100% less rattle!! WooHoo!!!

Took alot of time, more than expeceted, but really took my time and rewires a couple wires from my alarm system!

What i did is epoxied the 3 plastic parts into the firewall, and let it dry for an hour before putting back in everything!!

Hope its going to last!! And what a difference!!

got my dash off anyways, great thread here. If you have the vacation pics, it's easy. It was a pain by myself to move the heavy dash, but with 2 people it would be no problem. I figure 1.5 hours to remove it if you just go at it.

Sounds about right, i took my time, and well took most of the day, started at 9am and finished at 3pm, but took a 2.5hour break and rewired some wires from my alarm system!

The screws that i was having trouble finding where the ones under the passenger side dash (for the airbag) after that, bingo everything went smooth!

Here are some pics of my dash at it!

That's exactly why I actually took mine off. It's so much easier to run wires properly with it gone. Not necessary, but definitely my preference.

Those two bolts under the pass side airbag took me a while to find even with the vac pics. But yeah, those and a few harnesses and it was off.

Very nice jproy12!! Like I said, those clips on the firewall is making the noise. I have no idea why the TSB did not address this.........

TSB only did half the job.

Sure was a great thing to do!!

Dont regret it at all!

so...I have tried just about everything, and cannot find the solution. I jammed a bunch of cut rubber spacer down in between the windshield...but it didnt help a bit.

this is what you guys are hearing too, right?

I know this is old, but worth a shot if you're still having the buzzing -

The fuel lines in the engine bay. Happened on mine. A zip tie around the three lines, not too snug but just snug enough to stop them from vibrating should fix this. Just after where they poke through the firewall.

Solved it for me.

It didn't quite sound like the same buzz, but I had it on mine. When I downshifted and began to slow down it would buzz like crazy at around 3,000RPM.

i didn't like the idea of ties around the fuel lines so it's not tight, just enough to change the frequency which they vibrate at.

yeah, it is still going on. so weird that is is completely temperature related. in winter, when it is below say 60 degrees, the sound is gone completely. only when the weather warms up. i will be back to monkeying with it no doubt. i will definitely investigate the fuel lines..i am not sure where they would enter the firewall from inside the engine bay. from below?

very annoying.
