GT Vs. Spec.B?

Recommended Posts

Well, many of you may have read my thread about switching to a Legacy from my GTI. Im selling the GTI therefore I want my daily drive to be everything I want and make me happy every time I drive it. As a result, im torn between saving the money and going GT, or doing what I think I should and splurging on the Spec.B. I mean there are some features that really sell me on the Spec.B, the interior ir pretty darn nice, its laoded features wise inside, 18" wheels that look pretty darn nice. The addition of a 6th gear is one I think is important, especially consideirng im used to a 6speed now. SI drive also looks like a pretty nice feature. The one thing that im relaly attracted to are Bilsteins from the factory. I have yet to drive either of the two cars but how much of a difference is there in handing from the GT to the Spec.B? Also, If I splurge on the Spec.B there goes precious money I could have used to mod the GT... any input guys and gals is appriciated, thanks!

personally, I would go for the spec b with the bilsteins, 6 speed, and drop dead gerogious interior. That is if you are going for a 07 or an 08

Buy it for the 6-speed, nav and interior.

However, the wheels and suspension and better serviced by the OEM+ or aftermarket route as there are a LOT of JDM Bilstein options and Bilstein HDs that offer different/better dampening vs. the USDM SpecB Bilsteins. You can do an HD + your choice of spring package for anywhere between $900-1,100.

Good thread on the suspension here:

Can someone explain the benefit of the Torsen rear diff? Is it that much better?

I am considering selling my 2003 Mustang Cobra Convertible for a Spec.b. I need something that will get around Colorado during the winter.

xclomo - you'll really love the spec.B, but remember to budget in some winter tires, as the RE050s that come with the spec.B are summer performance tires and are about as useful as drag Hoosiers on snow.

That said, they're really nice tires whenever the traction is good.

As to the O.P.'s question, it's a very individual question. Coming from the GTI, though, I don't think you will be satisfied with the 5MT. The 6MT is very smooth.

Ich bin echt viel netter, wenn ich nuechtern bin. Echt!

cool as the alacantra or whatever inserts are I really do love the red leather seats too... And the 6 speed is cool but im totally happy with the 5 speed. I think it was a worth while trade-off for not having SI-Drive

Yeah I just picked up a set of pirelli Pzero Nero All season tires for my rims and I love them... had the stock 050s on it before these...

It really depends on if you are going to buy new or used:

If you are buying new I would buy the GT:

Reason: More rebates on the GT, less price (around a 7K savings), You plan on modding, (so you can fix the suspension difference and get better wheels the spec B's arn't wide enough), more color options, maybe others but i'd have to think a bit longer.

If you are buying used it depends on price. If you can find a good price get the spec B if you like the color. For example there is a 2008 Spec B at the dealership I bought my car from with only 7500 miles on it and they are asking 26.5K. Very good deal, considering you could probably work them down a bit.

Whatever route you choose save money to mod. The spec B is not perfect. If you buy one you will still want to mod. Mods can get expensive.

What I did:

Bought a new 08 LGT for 26.8K +tax (negotiated price) in december and have allready modded the crap out of it.

Mod List:

Accesport

Perrin Downpipe

AEM intake

Custom CBE

Konig feathers wheels

DIY grill

Tint

Total Cost: <2k

I am not done yet, next is suspension, which i will spend < 1k.

So If you put 3K into mods on a GT, you will have a faster car and a better handling car minus the 6 speed.

Sorry for the long post.

Hope this helps, good luck with your purchase.

EDIT: The GT comes with SI drive as well.
