Changing Tranny+Diff Fluid. Necessary?

Recommended Posts

I cant find anywhere in my maintanence booklet where it ever requires these fluids to be changed.

You are partly correct.

For normal service, only a fluid level inspection is required at 30,000 mile intervals.

But note #3 in the maintenance schedule states this:

"When the vehicle is frequently operated under severe driving conditions, replacement should be performed every 24,000 km (15,000 miles)."

Towing a trailer would be an example of a severe driving condition.

Personally, assuming no towing use, I would change the rear differential fluid every 30k, after a first change around 5k, because break in of the ring and pinion creates a lot of abrasive iron particles. And I would change the tranny fluid every 30k.

I live in Southern California, so "severe" conditions don't exist (I don't have a trailer). Therefore I never have to change the tranny oil by subaru's guidelines.

If you take a look at the oil in your rear differential, you will see that it is tar black. And you will want to change it.

What brand would you recommend? Royal Purple? Redline?

I like Royal Purple but in all honesty...unless you have some high horsepower machine pumping out hundreds of horsepower I'd just save the dough and go with whatever Subaru recommends.

just had mine done as part of 30k mile service

Would you remember what is the capacity of differentials front and back on 2005 normally aspirated Legacy ?

Assuming you have the same car :)
