Exhaust Whistle

Recommended Posts

I've had my '97 Legacy for almost a year now, and since I've had it, it's been making a loud whistling noise whenever I rev the engine around 3000-4000 rpm. I was hoping I could get some advice on what may be causing this before I take it to the dealer to get it checked out.

Here's a link to a sound clip I made of the noise:

That is with the car parked, so I had to rev it quickly to get the sound, but when I'm driving it is a lot more drawn out and makes the noise until it shifts gears. Also, making this clip I found that the muffler sounds pretty bad. Is it just because the muffler is worn out that it makes the noise, or is it something else?

Any Ideas?

Thanks.

Mine does the same thing, and I've noticed a LOT of the 96-99 model run cars do it. I am also curious as to what it is. I'm guessing it's a hole/gap somewhere? It's annoying...

...but I just tell my friends it's the extra twin turbos that make noise at higher RPMs :p

I posted this on another forum, and someone replied with this:

I laughed pretty hard!

Apparently the noise is just from a worn out muffler though. I'm going to replace mine soon, so I'll post here if that fixes it.

ive also got a sound somewhere in the mid RPM range (no tach on the automatic :( ) on my car..... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vyf9DdlPDZk]YouTube - '97 Legacy exhaust (take 2)[/ame]

you can hear it better towards the end. talking with a couple other people, we think that there is a hole somewhere along the exhaust, it seems to be coming from the front, so maybe its my headers? i drove over the camera and noticed alot of soot on one spot, could this be it?

Had the same issue with my car until about 2 weeks ago. (I've only had the car two months). Had the heads done when I bought it, replaced the exhaust gaskets when the engine was out hoping that would fix it but no luck. Replaced the exhaust headers which were rotted out, all hidden behind the maze of heat shields. Needless to say it's gone.
