Drew888 Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Pissed and upset at the same time. Just a month ago a gravel truck spilled part of it's load and for 2 miles I'm slowing down and trying out each lane avoiding stones hitting the front of my car. These two miles were very painful...just a crack, crack...crack, about 1/second. Result; one good paint nick that actually penetrated the plastic and just a few more light chips...could have been worse. Then today... I'm driving to work this morning and in maneuvering around a slower car I run over an axle dropped by some other car. Didn't see the other car & I'm sure the axle was there for a day or two already. It was parallel to the lanes of traffic and precisely on a white dividing line. At 75mph is was a blur, I see it .05 sec from hitting it and BANG! Front still feels / drives fine. Something must be off and I'll have it checked out but my rear tire is flat. Nothing time and $ can't fix right..... Sucks... executor485 Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Ouch... That sucks ballz mate... If I pass you on the right, I'm flipping you off.
mightyS Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 I hate gravel trucks. I knew a cop in Florida who would ticket them and make them return to the gravel pit to unload if they were overloaded and spitting gravel on the roads. I was behind a large flat bed trailer on the way to work. It was one of those used to carry bulldozers. Well it it a bumb and threw dirt and rocks at me. One hit the very top of my windshield and cracked it. That cost me $500 to replace it.
WhatV8 Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 In my area it is road construction time again, which means poorly maintained dump trucks will be littering the road again with their gravel spray. I can feel your pain Drew. A friend of mine was driving his, then, two week old vehicle on the expressway when he came upon a flatbed semi hauling crushed cars that were just strapped to the trailer with chains (can you see where I am going). The truck was in the right-hand lane, he moved over to the left-hand lane (3 lane wide road). The truck hit a bump and he saw something drop off the side of the bed, it was an alternator. He was almost along side the trailer when this happened and was watching out his passenger window. The alternator bounced twice, then bounced off one of the trailer's tires and took a left turn at Albaqurque. It skipped off his front fender, hood, winshield and roof then off the center median. He just about crapped his pants, luckily it didn't go through his windshield and kill him. He kept his composure and got the hauler's info off the semi and made a claim. The company paid for the damages and was fined by the state. Drive safe out there.
Drew888 Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 Just got a quick report from Renick Subaru. All they can find wrong is a blown rear tire and cracked rear rim. Front suspension appears to be ok. When it's all over I'll still take it to my alignment guy to verify. [URL="http://legacygt.com/forums/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=1586"VbGallery/URL]
fonts Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Good to hear .... could have certainly been much worse.
RShaw Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 hey you know if a rock flys off a dump truck and hits a car, they are responsible to fix what ever it broke. I think the ticket they get is failure to secure load....Just flag them down, or get their plate.
jmo Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I ran over an axle before in my old car...f'd up three wheels and the rocker panel
Gire Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I once drove over a full sized glass Coke Bottle that blew out a tire in half a second while I was doing about 65 km/h... on a crowded bridge, during heavy traffic. Not being able to stop and having to drive on rim for a several hundred metres wasn't fun. Of course I didn't have a spare tire because my huge sub box taking up that space was an extra big burn... thank God I had a cell phone and auto/ towing insurance at the time (thanks Dad). Experiences. You'll look back on this in 15 years like I do now, and laugh.
Drew888 Posted April 18, 2008 Author Posted April 18, 2008 My rear tire hit the end of the driveshaft and it pierced the tire and cracked the middle of the rim. I drove another 5 min. to work (the next exit) and didn't notice a thing. I slowed down and turned everything off trying to detect anything unusual but other than the alignment being a tiny bit off i couldn't see anything wrong...that is until I parked it (nod goes to the RE050's). Anyway, get this the stealership charges $265 for the tire and $435 for the rim. That along with my 12k service it came to $801.00 $500 of which is from my deductable. People have asked if cars were swerving around it after I hit it. Not a one as this thing was heavy and didn't move at all. Must have been out of a big truck. I'm sooooo happy to be driving my LGT again. I have a much better appreciation for it after having been stuck driving the ever crappy Chevy HHR as a rental! That thing is dangerous. I complained how this thing shouldn't be allowed on the road long enough to talk them into a heavy discount at Enterprise.
