Genesis coupe - again

Somehow I was under the impression that they weren't able to make the coupe in RWD, making it just another v6 FWD coupe. Then I read this month's Motor Trend and WOW - that's a nice car.

You can get it w/ the 2.0 turbo and 6spd manual starting at $20k. They say the engine was tested to 29 psi (9.3:1 compression) so it's got huge potential. We may just have the new "hot" coupe for tuners. Huge brakes w/ 4-piston calipers, 19 inch wheels, and a Torsen LSD. It's almost a mini-Supra.

It's great when the base model of a car is turbo! The v6 will appeal to those who don't want to mod, or don't mind a much more expensive path. The first twin turbo v6 Genesis will be one bad mofo but we all know the 2.0 will have an easier time making huge HP.

Let's just say if I was buying a car today, the LGT would lose out to this one. Sure, it's not AWD, but I have a 4x4 truck for crappy weather anyway.

It'll be a big hit, I imagine.

If I was 21 years old and wanted an OEM forced induction sports car, it'd be my first choice (VW GTi would be a top contender too, but I'd go with the Hyundais for cheaper costs and better reliability) With some tweaks it'll hand a new Civic Si it's ass.

I can't imagine somebody looking at a Caliber SRT4 and thinking that it's a better car.

until they quit stealing designs from other car manufacturers i cant take them seriously. it's pretty ridiculous how they still do that.

Looks like the Lexus IS from the front and G37 in the back!?

Gotta lose the front black plastic grill but other than that, it does not look that bad at all.

Won't buy it but I see a huge potential with this one also.

I see huge potential by not in the near future. The 05+ LGT got tuners involved quickly due to the fact it is very similar to WRX and STI engines. This hyundai is a completly new machine. I would say atleast 1-2 years to get serious performance out of these cars.

Here's hoping for a turbo Subaru or Toyota coupe at ~3k lbs...

the styling of the Genesis could have been very good, but it is let down by a few very fundamental details.

The dip in the rear quarter window line. IF the belt line is a problem, lower it, but making it not straight is odd.

Tiny little grille with wide swaths beside it.

Odd front bumper cover below the grille

looks like it has had more of a facelift than Joan Rivers, by how elongated the headlights are.

Could have been great. Ends up merely acceptable. Actually, I think the sedan is more handsome as a sedan, than the coupe in it's context.

but see who doesn't steal some design parts from other makers.

hyundai is just more blatant with it....

a little is okay.

what they're doing is beyond the limits of what's acceptable in my opinion.

they're almost as bad as the chinese cars.

It's 65 lbs lighter than an Infiniti coupe but the Hyundai is a pig? Anything except an econobox is going to weigh 3300+ lbs these days thanks to crash requirements and all the features crammed into the design.

The black plastic grille is a letdown, yet the first thing LGT owners want is less chrome on their grille...

I think the "it's just a Hundai" comments (here and elsewhere) are funny. Others chuckle at my car and say "just a Subaru." Hell, maybe Bently and Rolls owners laugh at each other when they pass. My family owns three Azeras and they're very nice cars. They're solid, quick, and reliable, and have more than enough content to warrant their $30k price tag. My mother will probably switch to a Genesis sedan when they're released. She got her Azera within the first few weeks they were available, and after 2.5 years she's had zero problems.

There's finally a car in the $20k range that'll make an impact that hasn't been seen since the original DSMs -- you'll be able to buy a cheap turbo car that isn't FWD. These won't need any mods to handle a Civic Si; they'll have torque and traction, not to mention a dash design that doesn't suck. A $10k savings over similar cars is enough to endure the stigma of driving "just" a Hyundai.

What'd they steal anyway? Cars look pretty much the same today -- a melted bar of soap. Does that mean they all copied the Taurus or second-gen Camry? On one car, their headlights resemble one car and tails another, so that's a ripoff? Start buttons are all the rage today; does that mean they're stealing from 1950s vehicles?

Looks aside, what matters is that their cars deliver. Appearance wouldn't mean anything if they were crap otherwise. I think it's funny that the closest competition for the Mustang will be made in South Korea. That they bested the domestic automakers with a V8 RWD luxury sedan is even better.

The G37 is also a pig and it's loaded down with all kinds of luxury and sound deadening material so it's probably not the best comparison for the Genesis coupe. The Nissan 350Z on the other hand weights 3320 lbs with a V6, 130 lbs lighter than the Genesis turbo-4. Mustang V6 weights 3352 lbs. If Subaru can make a WRX that weights 3200 lbs with 2 extra doors and a hatch, the Genesis coupe should be able to come close to that with the turbo-4 version.

I couldn't agree more.

I will make a bet with you right now that the new 370z or what ever it is called will weigh closer to the genesis turbo -4 than the 350z. Its really hard to compare a "new production" car to one that has been around for what, 5 or 6 years without any major changes. And costs signicicantly more.

The problem with the grille is not the color. It is the tiny little puckered size. It isn't a matter of it being a hyundai or not, but a poor design choice.

Actually, I quite like the "klingon" grille on the sedan.

I have a hard time believing that the base V6 S-197 Mustang is 3352lbs. My father has one, and it is not a small car, nor a light car. I've driven it, and it seemed to "feel" heavier in it's responses than my Legacy. 350Z seems like it would weigh ~3300lbs... Mustang seems like a bigger heavier car.

Sadly, the G37, as sexy as it looks, is no lightweight.

Unfortunately if 3300-4000lb coupes are becoming common-place, that is going to manifest itself in chassis dynamics. The laws of physics are self-enforcing.

if i just couldn't shake the stigma of owning a hyundai........ i would trade up to the new genesis coupe...........

I know its a Hyundai, but with 29 PSI capabilities in a V6!

You can reach 500whp easily with a Big Turbo/FMIC/bigger injectors/etc setup. For the price of this car, thats a steal.

The only reason why I wouldn't be interested is because I only drive AWD.

For those that are interested....

2.0 turbo, Rear LSD, 29PSI pressure tested.....

add a FMIC, injectors/pump a bigger turbo and a good tune and you have a 400WHP monster.

Get ready to get your asses handed to you at the track :)

I will def be test driving one :)

I owned an 04 Tiburon GT. I LOVED that car :)

It had everything and cost me well under 20k :)

I hope you are wrong but I wouldn't be too surprised. Then again Nissan has stated its goal of reducing vehicle weight by 15% by 2015, maybe the Z will be the first beneficiary of this initiative.

The sketch has no watermark, and I think is the catalyst for the mentioned article. The blue rendering has an Autocar.co.uk watermark in it, and I wonder if it is a bit more of their fabrication, than an outlet from an inside source that knows what the designs inside Toyota/Subaru look like.
