Pitfalls when purchasing used legacy GT??

Hey all, Im new to the forum. Just drove a friends 2000 legacy GT and loved it. Im in the market for a car ~$7000 range so this is a definite possibility. I live in Portland, Or and will mainly be using it for getting around town and gettin up to the mountain during the winter. Are there any issues or common flaws that I should be aware as I look for the right car. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

2000 should not have a head gasket problem. I believe head gasket issues were limited to the DOHC 2.5L in the 97 LGT. In 98 they went to a SOHC design and I believe rectified the head gasket issues.

This board does not have as many resources for pre-05 Legacy's, but there is a section on it for "older" Legacy platforms. Browse there and also at NASIOC:

My 98 definitely had the HG problem.

2000-2002 models had the head gasket issues as well. They should also have had the coolant conditioner added each time the coolant was flushed/changed (if performed should be written w/ Sharpie on the metal in front of the top edge of the radiator - date & C.C. for coolant conditioner campaign). Some questions depend on the mileage... Past 100k or so, new timing belt, water pump, oil pump seal, belts, fuel filter.

If it's a manual, has the clutch been changed (were the pilot & throw out bearings ($10-15 each) and rear main seal ($10 part) also replaced when the trans was out for clutch?), 02 sensors, hoses, etc?

If the head gaskets haven't been swapped, a good test is put on a new radiator cap. It will bump the pressure just enough to let you know about any potential head gasket problems within a few weeks (was 2 weeks in my case).

Drop me a PM if you have any other specific questions, I have learned the hard way about some of these items since even after specifically asking my local dealer for advice on addtl items to swap/replace during trans work, etc they still didn't mention any of these things...
