Penphoe Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Is there anything I should be aware of in putting the Cobb turbo heat shield on my MY05 LGT? I bought my car used and it didn't have the stock heat shield on it. Before anyone says "go get a used stock one", someone local to me in Canada is selling their Cobb heat shield for $40 Canadian - I save on shipping and taxes. How many bolts does the Cobb heat shield use? What are the size and thread pitch of the bolts? Anyone care to share some pics of their Cobb heat shield? LaterZ! Darren!!
qikslvr Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I've got on sitting on the shelf in my garage. It uses 3 bolts that have 10mm heads. I don't remember if they are just sheetmetal screws or regular threads(I'll try to get pics for you). You will put one screw in the bottom of the heatshield on the tranny side of the turbo, one near the top on the tranny side and one on the bottom near the passenger side strut tower. Hopefully they left the bracket on the top of the tubro that connects to the top two bolts of the turbo->DP connection. It has one of the bolt holes you need to attach to. Just make sure you tighten the screws as tight as you can without stripping them. The Cobb heatshield has a habit of rattling or ringing when you rev and let off. When I put mine back on I plan to use a layer of header wrap between the heatshield and the brackets to quiet it down. If you could find washers that would take the heat from the turbo you could use them also, but I haven't found any rubber washers that will take the 1000*F temps rising from the turbo. Give me some time and I will try to get a pic of my turbo with the bracket I mentioned and a pic of the heatshield installed. Let's kick this pig!
Penphoe Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 Thanks. Yah, I read about the rattles and stuff. I'd prob. just use regular metal stainless steel washers. 10mm bolts eh? Now I've got to find the right length and thread pitch Thanks again. LaterZ! Darren!!
qikslvr Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Give me a little time(in-laws are here) and I'll get pics/data of the bolts/screws. I don't remember right off if they were the self taping metal screws or regular bolts. I just need to spend some quality time with the wifes parents and then I can bail into the garage and get some work done. I'm pretty sure they were 10mm heads with a flat slot in them, so they may very well be sheet metal screws but I will check for sure and report back. Let's kick this pig!
qikslvr Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 O.K. so I found the bolts. They actually have a Phillips slot not a straight and they are actual threaded bolts. The bolts is a little less than a 1/2 inch long. I'm going to take a couple pics under the hood also to show you the bracket that is needed and I'll see if the bolt size is the same as the 10mm BOV bolts that way you could at least have one with the right thread pitch to shop with. BRB Let's kick this pig!
Penphoe Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 Beautiful! Thanks for the info. My daughter is taking a nap right now, so hopefully I can take a peek underneath my hood. Best case scenario is that the mounting bolts are in the holes holding nothing together. I really appreciate all the help. LaterZ! Darren!!
qikslvr Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 O.K. here we go. The bolts that hold the BOV to the intercooler are the same thread pitch as the heatshield bolts, but they are twice as long. Below are some pics of my turbo. The brass looking bracket that is attached to the top two bolts of the exhaust housing is what the heat shield bolts to. I have circled the bolt holes that you will use in red. I think you should be able to put a couple metal flat washers under the shield to hold it up off the bracket a little. The bracket is what makes it ring when the shield vibrates on it. Let me know how it goes. Let's kick this pig!
Penphoe Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 I'm bummed. Thank-you so much for taking the time to snap pics for me. Looks like when the prev. owner put the stock turbo and downpipe back in, they neglected to put the heat shield mounting bracket back in. I only have the lower mounting bracket. No upper mounting bracket. ARGH. Oh well, my underhood temps will just have to stay warm while my wallet keeps its $40. I have a SS oil line going to the top of my turbo, rather than the hard line that you have. My SS oil feed line routes over my WG actuator arm so it actually might cause clearance issues with the heat shield. Perhaps that's why they left it off? Again, thank-you so much for taking the time to snap the pics. LaterZ! Darren!!
qikslvr Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I've had mine off all winter and don't know if it will even fit when I put my new turbo in so I'm in the same boat. You can always just get some thermal blanket material and wrap it up. Let's kick this pig!
