Danase Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Everyone should be getting there cars ready for Spring! If you guys have any questions on cleaning up your rides feel free to ask!
OCDetails Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Spring may be here in Michigan, but we had 6 inches of snow on Monday and it is going to be shit all week next week too. lol I think the April Showers are still attacking everybody. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . kenchan Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 i just got done washing the salt and crap off the exterior the other weekend. also cleaned out the interior, a/s floor mats, etc. used PrimaNero 50:50 dilluted with distilled water. perfect. used simple green 50:50 with tap on the a/s floormats to clean. Nero turned out real nice and clean, matte finish. going to be doing some claying this weekend, probably. dont feel like doing it all in one shot. wash car, Prima Hydro. then spot clay contaminated areas, spot Prima Hydro again. the next weekend probably put my summer wheels on.
Danase Posted April 7, 2008 Author Posted April 7, 2008 I wanted to wash the cars this weekend because it was awesome outside all weekend but after we moved the business and after cleaning the garage Sunday that was enough for me. Next weekend I have the first detail of the season! Can't wait!
iyalla Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Did a mild detail yesterday in the sun just couldn't stand looking at the grey winter grime anymore. Simple wash and wax. Poorboys EX-P rocks in the sun and really brings out the blue in the Atlantic Blue paint of my wagon This also helped me evaluate the paint so I can do a full detail in a couple of weeks when (if) the weather gets even warmer. Looks like the bottom of the doors and bumpers need clay, they got abused by the snow/salt.
Zed 2.0 Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Put on a fresh coat of wax a couple days ago. It's amazing how swirl-resistant this Subie paint is, considering how cheap the paint is in other respects. Where I would have had major swirling and marring on my old Audi after a long winter, the Subie barely has so much as a single swirl.
OCDetails Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I was out detailing all weekend. '07 Porsche 997, '05 H2, '03 Pilot, and '05 Corolla. I'm beat! Time to rest up for next weekend. I'm sure I'll have a chance to throw down pictures here and there, but since this is a legacy board I guess you all are going to have to head to Danase's detailing forum to see the cars. I need Euclid to come back around so I can get a Legacy notch on my belt this spring. stewartg Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 My Legacy has only been out of the garage to have the short throw installed, and then drove it all week while the impreza was in the boy shop. So it is still looking good from my winter detail (wash, clay, megs cleaner, ssr2, ssr1, 2x wolfgang, xmt 180, wash, opti-seal). I did AIO on the Impreza a month ago to finally give it a good cleaning from a winter of ONR washes. Unfourtunately the body shop put some swirling in it doing a "coutesy" wash, so I had to do a wash, clay, optimum compound, optimum polish, optimum poli-seal, optimum opti-seal on it this last weekend. http://lh6.google.com/birbeck/R_p16wXQYXI/AAAAAAAAA6s/jKw-bju05K0/s400/P1020035.JPG.jpg http://lh4.google.com/birbeck/R_p17QXQYYI/AAAAAAAAA60/jGM_FvbYxnU/s400/P1020036.JPG.jpg http://lh6.google.com/birbeck/R_p17wXQYZI/AAAAAAAAA68/C_PC4n6B4-Y/s400/P1020038.JPG.jpg http://lh3.google.com/birbeck/R_p18AXQYaI/AAAAAAAAA7E/2c5FOnw1pEo/s400/P1020039.JPG.jpg http://lh5.google.com/birbeck/R_p18gXQYbI/AAAAAAAAA7M/Gi274XEU-Ys/s400/P1020040.JPG.jpg Of course, the car got bombed by the birds today and there is a lot of pollen and sap in the air.
OCDetails Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 I'd go out there and do it, but my evil mother lives in CT and it is too small of a state to enter without risking running into relatives. I like having the central time zone as a buffer between me and the crazy people out there. Sorry. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . C O M OCDETAILS BLOG

SneakyFast Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I've got a question for you Danase. I'm going to do a wash, clay, polish and seal on the car here pretty soon. I've heard it's a good idea to wash with a mild dish soap to wash off all of the old sealant and/or wax before the clay-polish-sealant. I have also heard never to use dish soap. Which is best?
Gmoe Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 ^ Dawn or pretty much any brand should work. Anything that will break down grease should do the job. You'll know pretty quickly when you start washing it. The finish will be "squeaky" clean, not smooth.
stewartg Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 The Dawn will also dry out your plastics and rubbers. Clay and polish will be effective at preparing the car for sealant/wax without washing with a harsh detergent.
OCDetails Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Dawn may dry out the plastics and rubber, but how much of that is there really on a Legacy? It isn't something you need to worry about if you are only doing it once or twice a year. Clay is only designed to pull things out of the paint and it doesn't do the best job of stripping wax and sealants. Dawn will get the wax and most sealants and then you can rely on the paint polishing to get the rest. The reason why you hear to never use dish soap is because some guys do that for every wash. In fact, in the owner's manual for my '99 Integra it said to use dish soap to wash the car with. The problem with that is that it strips the wax off, as discussed previously. It isn't something you want to use for everywash, but it can be used if stripping the wax off is your objective. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . If you are going to polish that will remove the old wax. I don't recommend dish soap to remove old wax. For one, it's not made for automotive paint and for two it doesn't always remove the wax. I always recommend P21S Total Body Wash to remove old wax. But like I said, if you're going to polish anyway don't sweat it.
SneakyFast Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Cool, thanks for the help (and the legacygt coupon code).
SneakyFast Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Ok. I'm about to start to polish with Swirl Abolisher I and I was originally going to coat it with Danase Sealant when I was done but I just found a bottle of Meguiar's NTX wax I forgot I had. Would it be worth my time to hit it with the NTX before I seal it?
OCDetails Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Sure, go for it. That would probably look really good, but it isn't really necessary. If you do decide to layer them that way, then just make sure you go NXT first and then the Danase Sealant. NXT has some paint cleaners and polishes in it that will keep it from layering. It would actually remove the Danase Sealant instead of layering on top of it. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . SneakyFast Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Well, all done. I decided to skip the NTX. I was 4.5 hours into it already... wasn't worth the effort. On a side note, I'm really impressed with the swirl abolisher. It took out a lot of the little surface scratches and it even polished out the finger nail scratches from under all of the door handles. When I finished the sun was almost directly overhead so it was difficult to get any decent pictures. This is a pretty good shot of the paint. SWP is teh sexy... http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/shearbiggity/P1010171.jpg
