abakja1 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I borrowed this pic off another member. But my Stromung Catback has its Y-pipe section rubbing on my driver side cv Boot. It wore out the edges past the clamp and didnt know about this till I put my oem exhaust back on to get some Warranty work done at the dealership... Anyways,..I have GP Moto coilovers and also Kartboy eurothane hangers for the mufflers. So Im wondering if this is a common problem for those who have: 1. Larger exhausts or 2 1/2 inch Y-Pipes. 2. The kartboy hangers (only for the mufflers) making the mufflers "tucked" in higher causing the Y-Pipe section higher??. 3. GP Moto coilovers lowering the car causing axle too close to muffler.. http://i31.tinypic.com/33w5kyf.jpg http://i25.tinypic.com/9r36v7.jpg Any suggestions so I can put my Stomung back on? I can do one of 2 things,...have an exhaust shop weld a longer hanger on the Y-pipe or see if the oem hanger will make the clearance...but I havent heard or anyone else that have Kartboy hangers with this problem yet
psucaptainkickass Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I "may" have this problem too...I noticed the small amount of clearance...I have a Perrin setup. I have to check when I get a chance.
abakja1 Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 Anyone else experiencing this or maybe Im the only one that just found out about it?
Xenonk Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 that's not a cv-boot, that's just the connection to the multi-link suspension that you are rubbing on.. I can't imagine the location that you are rubbing on because it doesn't seem to fit the way you are describing.. Keefe

Sorry,. what my Y-pipe is hitting is the end of the rubber boot here in yellow...I circled the wrong end of the boot, and you gotta look beyond the subframe. http://i25.tinypic.com/2584j9z.jpg
reid-o Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Are you running the extended hangers or the normal length hangers? I just installed a catback last night. I'll check and let you know. I'm using the stock rubber hangers for now.
reid-o Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Nope I have good clearance. If you run an extended hanger on the y pipe it should sit lower to give you more clearance. You'd have to loosen the two axlebacks first and then retighten I would think. abakja1 Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Well I bolted on my Stromung exhaust and even tried to put in a longer hanger for the Y-pipe,..but the clearance is still close and tight. Im sure that if the exhaust hadnt already chewed up the boot, it would do so if it were new...Any loosening of the bolts and realignment helps minimally as I can only lower it to where it is now without having any bolt alignment issues. I think the center piece or midpipe to the y-pipe needs to hang lower, and I have a Crucial racepipe that wont let me hang it any lower than it is. It seems that others would have this problem and Im thinking it has to do with Crucial race-pipe I have. I think that if the center pipe allowed more "droop", I would not have the Y-pipe section so tucked up into the body. I thought about letting the racepipe off the tranny hanger, but then the Stromung Shorty and entire piece to the Y-pipe would have no support... I think this is still a problem and will keep an eye out as I have basically less than 1/4" clearance,..maybe 1/8"??.

If it's heat, then you could wrap that portion of the pipe slightly. But if it's contact, then maybe weld in a flex section and have them angle it down a bit. I'm sure you know that none of the shops here Tig weld, but considering that the exhaust is not a weak link on the stock turbo--and the fact that you went up in piping size there--some but welds aren't going to ruin much of anything. I'm sure Rads or some other cheapo place can blast in a mig'd section fast if you have it while angling the exhaust for you. I just realized that I have the stock downpipe (gutted) and so I'm on the stock donut, which gives some flex.
reid-o Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 I guess the DSM way would be to pull it back off and take your heel and jump up and down on it till it dents in. "fixed!!" ahahah remember those days?
abakja1 Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 I just need a little "droop" or sag from either the Crucial racepipe (where oem 3rd cat was) or the Stromung midpipe to the Y-Pipe. I can have an exhaust shop weld in a longer hanger to try and force the contact point at the Y-pipe apart to have piece of mind. I have the stock doughnut on the racepipe, but I have a nut and bolt instead of the flex springs to seal the connection from exhaust leaks. Its all fine and dandy, but need piece of mind that the exhaust wont totally tear up the boot. Will take a picture and show everyone my exact problem tonight... SeeeeeYa Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Do what you have to do to fix this immediately. Then make sure your CV boot is not compromised. Failure of this boot will bring you MAJOR grief.
abakja1 Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 I found an old pic and even Subaru took precautions with the oem Exhaust Y-Pipe,.. http://i27.tinypic.com/2md32x3.jpg

abakja1 Posted April 29, 2008 Author Posted April 29, 2008 Ah,..makes sense to cram it into 1 pipe,.. Doing this would add clearance, but ruin a nice Stromung catback,.. err,.."Not gonna do it"!
