basmoq Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 OK, so I notice strange things, but why is there a small pane of glass glued into the top of the ash tray under the AC controlls? the little (bakelight?) ash tray is removable I just noticed, and has a small window in it, almost as if it was meant to be lit up, but there is no light in there, i've had the dash all apart before. is it something for the JDM models??? Also, if you look in the ashtray, it seems as if there is a mount for some kind of accessory? it's two slots that look like something is supposed to slide into it. Can anyone explain these curiosities??? I know, I know, I ask pointless questions, but this one is boggling my mind:spin:

I think I can just wire one to the socket since it is switched, it should take me like 5 min and a bit of epoxy Either that or a trip to the junk yard... problem is our cars are hard to come by in the junk yards, they just don't like to die...
basmoq Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 what models do you guys have? and what color is the light. I just have a 2.5i, so maybe they left it off on the lower end cars... I'm going to have to get myself one of these though, it will bug the tar out of me to know my car has a feature that's not installed, kinda like not having the steering wheel controls bugged me (oh it's great to have gotten those put in, my stereo is so much happier with them

Top dead center toward the back, small cutout with mini yellow light. It does a nice job of illuminating the caution this box can get hot sign.
Montana Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 The '05 has the cubby light and the warning sticker that stuff put in there will melt. There is no light in the '06 and I asked the dealer to check, in case it just was a bad bulb. Nope, no light in the '06. The little slots on the inner edge of the ash tray are for the "butt snuffer." I don't know, there's probably a real name for it. It's just a little elbow (one end goes down in the slots, the other end sticks out like a shelf) and is slotted, sort of a grill. You put out the burning ash end of a cigarette by mashing it there. I had a mailbox key get stuck in the '05 ashtray, that's where it's kept, and slid that little grill out of there. Then I looked in my '06 ash tray and there isn't a little grill in there. Still has the slots, though.
basmoq Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 Your the sh[t Montana, I was curious as heck as to what that was for. Being a smoker hater, I've never paid much attention to these things. In most of my previous cars there weren't any ash trays at all.

Machine Age Victim Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 the '05 2.5i has both illuminated, at leas mine is may want to take out and look at your lightless cubby before you get the light, mine has a special plug just for the light and a special slot for light to fit into, may not be there if they didn't put the light in. btw I also have a light for my cigarette lighter too.
basmoq Posted April 7, 2008 Author Posted April 7, 2008 I'm actually thinking to take the entire trim piece off a totaled car, I can light them off the power from the cigarette lighter. I may have to run some resistors in series with it depending on if it is meant to run 12v, but it shouldn't be a problem

ordiga Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Yeah, I have a 08 Spec B...mine doesn't light up....pisses my sh*t off really...lol I drove another 05 or 06 the other day (I work at a subaru dealer) and their ashtray was lit...needless to say I'm a bit jealous of the light....But thats added weight i really don't need....lol
