Convince me not to buy a Legacy GT

Recommended Posts

Alright LGT Owners, I want you to convince me why I should not by this car. I am coming close to purchasing a new car, and instead of being the average new guy asking for reasons that he should get the car, I am asking for the opposite. Tell me what you hate about your car; things that go wrong, things that you grew to hate, or things you hated from the beginning. Really, I just want to know every negative thing about this car. Please make reference to the year of the Legacy that you are referring to. Also, feel free to recommend alternative vehicles that might compensate for the negatives that you have listed. Thanks everyone.

The paint, its thin and prone to chips.

The interior, after a while every interior piece makes some sort of noise.

Thats all of mine...I've owned 2 Mitsubishi's, so cheap craftmanship is something I have been used to.

Not much leg room in the back seats.

Uh.

Hmmmm...

That's all I got.

Very true on this one. In my '05, there is absolutely no under-the-seat foot room so all you have is the footwell that you see. In addition, it's a cramped rear seat in general. I'm 5' 10" and I usually tell people to sit behind the drivers' seat since there's more legroom than on the passenger side. It's really a 4 person car (at most). Don't bother trying to stuff 5 people in there.

But... don't get a LGT, everyone and their mom has one.

Poor body integrity. Doors ding real easily.

The rear bumper has no reinforcement in the corners (as I found out when my wife backed into a pole).

Rattles are quite common and generally unfixable.

The sunroof thinks it's smarter than you. (Will not let you close it if it thinks it's jammed. Also it doesn't close all the way anyway and requires a minimum of two button presses to close)

The seats have poor lateral support.

Has less room than a Prelude between the seat and the door.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_QnGfkb0Kk]YouTube - 1995 Prelude SE -vs- 2007 Subaru Legacy GT[/ame]

Crappy glove box that's more of a trap door than it is a storage compartment.

Storage in the doors is the least amount of space I've seen in any vehicle.

Virtually impossible to grab something behind your seat without getting out of it.

Storage between the front seats is also the least amount of space I've seen in any vehicle (a dollar bill will not fit in it without being folded).

No where to put coins (the "pocket" under the stereo can't handle the weight if full or near full, and will not lean forward when you open the main 'door').

Everything else though I like.

Absolutely lousy customer service from dealers. There are exceptions, but I tried several and they SUCK. They are incompetent, they lie, they steal, they damage your car.

SOA has mixed record on warranty claims, usually they fix stuff, but try to do it as "goodwill one-time repair" for obvious cases which should have been fixed under warranty with no questions asked.

Overall customer service sucks.

The car itself is great, despite some issues, I don't see anything else I'd drive.

rattels, rattels, and more rattels........just when you think you have them all buttoned down a new pops up

My personal favorite is the one in the passanger B pillar that only happens when I accelerate and the car is between 2100 and 2600 RPM. It gives a nice buzz sound.

Rattles are inevitable in any car. I am annoyed that there is no low washer fluid light. I want express up windows like the older Legacys had. Overall, I love my car. Entertaining when I want it to be, comfy and secure when I want serenity.

rattles..

numb oem clutch..

crappy head unit

stu stu stutter..

CEL / CC blinks

that's it.. other than that.. i love the darn thing!

Why do you need a washer fluid light? If no water comes out when you press the button, you have run out

Seriously tho, check it when you fill up, ya know.. while you already have the hood up to check the oil.

I'm a lazy bastard:rolleyes:! Ever been on the freeway after a storm and run out of solvent? Then you gotta stop every mile and rub snow on the windshield, or piss in the bottle to get something to squirt:eek:

As for my 06

- Would rather have radio controls on the wheel than shifters (on the auto)

- Would like to be able to go after market radio.

- Would like boost gauge as standard in the GT

- Wish the back seats folded 60/40

- Wish the leather seats were more like those in my wife's 05 Honda Odyssey

wtf! I thought a low washer fluid light would be a given on a Subaru, I didn't even check to see if the car had it. It came in handy a lot on my old car.

OP, this topic may help you.

The shifter is notchy, clutch stinks in heavy traffic (literally), gas mileage is lower, seats are not the most comfortable (you get used to it), interior storage is sparse, stereo requires adjustments with each song to sound decent, trunk is tiny and has no keyhole, colors/options are limited.

Other things I wish the car had, (written before I purchased mine):

But the car is a dream otherwise :)

Thanks for the replies everyone, I really appreciate it. My brother has the Legacy 2.5i so I have had some experience in a similar car.. and I say that loosely as they are pretty different vehicles. I am not ready to buy just yet, but I will be soon, so all of your input definately helps. It is difficult for me to narrow it down to one car. I really like the Infiniti G35x, which my dad owns, but then I get no manual transmission and the gas mileage is slightly worse. It really is a tough decision for me. I just want a car that has AWD, mildly quick, and reliable. I suppose it will just be more information gathering for me. Thanks again for all the replies.

I am still not entirely in need of a new car at the moment.

Generally the only thing I dislike about the Legacy GT is the unrealistic expectations of some of the owners that are posrted here!
