Bdubs Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 So this taupe interior hasn't been as bad as I thought to keep clean. My only issue is the textured plastic pieces on the door card and entry sills. It doesn't matter what I use I can't get the dirt out of the indentations. So, I was thinking today of using the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, just the plain white one meant for household cleanup. Anyone tried this or a similar method before? I have tried all foaming interior cleaners and it doesn't do a thing.
fuzzydd Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I use this http://www.meguiars.com/estore/products/product_M3916.jpg
Brady Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 DO NOT USE MAGIC ERASER!!!!! Magic Eraser is abrasive and will damage the finish of the plastic. Use something like Mild Soap and Water with a soft cloth or maybe soft brush and when clean, treat it with an interior dressing. 303 Aerospace cleaner is also good and worth a try.
Aczwild Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Use a little Tide, WITHOUT BLEACH, on a wet rag, no more grease stains, etc on my A-pillar or the plastic trim JDM'd All to hell Thanks Jimmy @ Hkc-Speed.com! RIP Coxx & Thanks

We actually used the M.E. on a wall in our house that had a scuff and it tore the crap out of the paint. The walls is all nice except for in that spot and it's scratched and dulled....and this is 5 year old paint! I don't think 303 cleans that well. It is a decent protectant but not a good cleaner. Take a look at the 1Z line and they have some excellent plastic and vinyl cleaners and protectants.
LongHiway Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I actually tried Magic Eraser on a black plastic door panel and was surprised, it masked the scratches. It is abrasive and I was worried about discolorization by rubbing through the surface. I think, that soft plastic has the color throughout the material. Don't know if it would look worse on a lighter color. I won't try it on the hard silver plastics, I think that would go through the color into the base plastic.
GTTuner Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Use a little Tide, WITHOUT BLEACH, on a wet rag, no more grease stains, etc on my A-pillar or the plastic trim I have found liquid laundry detergent is awesome at cleaning my taupe floor mats. Try windex and a very soft bristle brush with a swirl motion.
Scooby2.5 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 How about the the marks you get from your foot swiping the map pocket on the door when you get out of your car? Mine is black. They dont seem like they are scratches but I cant seem to get them off. Anybody have any input on this?

The black map pocket that I seem to kick getting out of the car. Buyer beware, I am not making any promises for black or certainly a lighter color. Test it gently before scrubbing.
Brady Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Magic Eraser may take off the marks, but it will also take off the texture of the plastic. After a while you'll have a smooth or shiny spot on the panel instead of a nice matte texture on the plastic. Magic eraser really has no place in car care.
LongHiway Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 The issue that Greg and I see, is that the plastic is soft on the door panel and scratched. Unless you get the burrs off along the scratch line, you still see the scratch. I'v tried a variety of protectants and so on, they work till the stuff wears off, a couple of days. So, I don't disagree, you can do damage with ME (I've also worn paint off a wall) but, it does hide the scratches in black plastic.
Bdubs Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 Thanks, that was why I was concerned. Seems that I tried to clean the walls with one of these a few months ago and the finish dulled in multiple areas. I'm pretty sure on the package it doesn't say not to use on walls...as a matter of fact I think when they first came out they showed people using them on walls...hmm. Thanks for the help, I use all Meguiar's products and have not come across that vinyl cleaner before.
Bdubs Posted August 12, 2008 Author Posted August 12, 2008 Just an update here. I purchased the Meguiar's Heavy Duty Vinyl Cleaner ($7.99) from http:///www.autodetailingsolutions.com along with a few other things because the prices were right. Wow, it works great. I was surprised how all the crap built up in the textured plastic came right out with very little elbow grease and a toothbrush. Not only that, but it's a wax remover as well, so I used it on my rear bumper black plastic piece, which has had wax residue on it since the day I bought the car 2 years ago, and it came right out.
kenchan Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 dont use those magic erasers on the car. it's designed to work on stone wear and stove tops, etc. it will eat through plastic finishes (paint). done it know it. never again. at least it was on my kid's furniture...
