Surprised this hasn't been posted up yet.

piggy backing on the previous video found here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1097949

This was part of the recap from the 2007 driving event. The video is truncated to fit the 10 min requirement for youtube.

on a side note, when I dug up the old thread to link it, I was reminded of BryanH's issue with the depiction of the Volvo XC70 in the previous thread.

My wifes 2004 XC70 has gone places that old XC70 only has wet dreams of going because of the revamped AWD system. Changing from a VC system to Haldex will do that. That is why the video isn't relevant and I am sorry you cannot understand that.

Autoblog recently tested the new XC70 and had a similar experience as several of the videos depicted over the years.

Bad weather is the reason most people want AWD, but we were disappointed that the rugged looks of the XC70 didn't carry over to off-road performance, as stability control and AWD neuter wheel slip by locking the rubber all together. We also had little luck testing Volvo's hill descent control due to the fact that we couldn't get up the hill in the first place, and we're not talking Mt. Kilimanjaro, either folks. This was more like a bunny hill.

I don't buy that Highlander business. My mom had an RX300 with the same system and thing was a monster in the snow and icy driveway. I'm sensing some bias here.

Keep telling yourself that. :p You saw what I saw, it couldn't do it. End of story. Does that mean the Highlander is not a good off-road vehicle? No. But it does mean the Subaru is IN FACT better at sending traction to an individual wheel.

I still want to see a 5MT legacy with center and rear LSD climb that with no VDC...

That would be easier than the Forester since it's static at 50/50

Most Subaru Legacys are immobilized if one of the front wheels is up in the air. Yet in the real world they do fine so most folks don't care about some contrived test like the one shown.

Most consumers would consider a real-world test like the Canadian Driver giant winter traction test to be more predictive for their needs. The Subaru did well but was not the only one.

Many more Subarus have VTD and VDC than in the past, so they're more capable, but so are others. And tires continue to improve as well.

It'd climb the front or rear rollers just fine... but it couldn't climb on one wheel.
