croll326 Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 If you have done an HID install and used the factory grommets post your comments, pics, and suggestions here. Thanks. Im afraid that water/moisture will get in if i drill a huge hole in the plastic covers.
laz Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I have done both ways, and I recommend the factory grommet way. I have no pics, but it is very straight forward. X ---

TSiWRX Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Hey everyone, So, I figure that this would be a good place to ask, since it's one of the most recent "retro" threads. I'm not doing a retro, but instead, working on the tail-light sections. How "messy" is it going to get if I wanted to cut a bit of the "chromed" plastic reflector array, inside, say, the clear (reverse lamp) portion of the tail-light housing? I'm afraid that it'll look really bad - that the chromed plastic surrounding the cut would just chip/crack.... Any advice? <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family
MiniStiGuy Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 if you are going to cut you always tape first then make line marked on the tape to mark your cutting line and then cut. The tape helps to prevent any tearing or chipping on the surface. OEM HID's Rx330 Retro
TSiWRX Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 ^ Ah....that's my problem....and I apologize for not having clarified earlier. I am very reluctant to pull the lens off the back ( er...front? ) of the tail-light housing. So that'll prevent me from taping-off. I am thinking that drilling/cutting, without pulling the lens, won't be possible - at least not if I wanted to be neat. VXCL Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Every headlamp chrome reflector main part in all the lights i've messed with (hundreds) respond best to a dremel with a sanding bit when it comes to the final shaping / trim. No flaking and it looks like it was originally shaped that way when your done. MAYHEM #122/22 STS NNJR SCCA AUTOX4U.COM XENON RETRO GUIDE
TSiWRX Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 ^ Thanks, bruddah! I've never tried trimming such areas before, so I was very, very hesitant to do so. I'm going to purchase an el-cheapo e-bay headlamp unit to give this a practice go. Thank you for both your encouragement as well as wisdom/tips! <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family
Bbc84 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Drilled a 1" hole in the middle of that big cover that gives access to the low beam bulbs, fed all the wires in, and the HIDs came with a rubber grommet that plugged up the 1" hole. looks OEM'ish.
