axolotl81 Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Does anybody know about the 08 TPMS valve stems only able to be used one time? I just had my Work Emotions put on and the tire shop (Goodyear) told me that the valve stems cannot be removed once put on. I thought that was a bunch of BS, but they said that the way the TPMS has a brass fitting going into the rubber valve stem cannot be removed unless they break the rubber surrounding which ruins the TPMS. Any thoughts on this? Let me know. I'll take pics of the TPMS and put them up tomorrow to give you guys a better look at these things.
LGT Dave Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Yes, the TPMS sensors in the '08 cars are different than previous years. The previous sensors were all one piece and are completely reusable. The sensors they use for '08 have a rubber valve stem separate from the sensor itself. The sensor can be re-used, but the service manual says that the rubber valve stem must be replaced with each tire change. See here: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/tiremonitor.html And here: http://www.schraderservice.com/howtofitme/Snap-in%20Fitment%20Procedures%20V7.0.pdf
axolotl81 Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 Okay. Thats good to know. I just have to get the rubber part new, but reuse the actual sensor. Thanks for the info. Now I gotta ask KOP for a price.
grocery getter Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I had discount tire move the TMS system form the stockers to my Roata tarmac III;s with any issue. Don't know if you have one in your area but they maybe able to help as well.
axolotl81 Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 Okay, I ordered my valve stems for the dealership today, but the parts guy said I may have to reset the TPMS even though its only the stems I am replacing. I figured as long as the TPMS boxes stay with the car, I wouldn't have to reset any of those. Anybody know the facts on that? Grocery Getter: They didn't have any issues at all? Did they have to replace your old stems or were they able to remove them easily and reinstall them? If thats the case, I'll go check them out. Thanks for the info.
Touge Tuning Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Unless you know which sensor was on which corner you will need to reset the TPMS when you swap wheels as the sensors are each tied to a corner and the system needs to be reset for it to associate the sensor with that wheel since its probably changed positions.
grocery getter Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 No sure about that? I know that Discount tire has a TMS replacement service and I figured all the parts switched over (then again I did buy 4 brand new Yoko 235/40/18 all season tires from them too)......I know that my TMS works with the new rims / tires. Sorry wish I could be more helpful.
LGT Dave Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 You shouldn't have to reset the system. Like Touge Tuning said, the system itself may not be reporting the pressure at the correct corner because the sensors will probably not be in the same corner they came off of. However, the system does not report those individual pressures inside the car to you. It just flashes a light on the instrument panel if the pressure is low in one/all tires. The only thing that can see the individual pressures is the Subaru Select Monitor at the dealership. To me, it's not worth paying to reset the system just so the techs at the dealer can see the right pressure at the correct corner of the car.
axolotl81 Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Okay. Thanks for all the information. I'll let you guys know what will happen when I get the valve stems. That way I can put my 2 cents of info to help the 08 guys.
Subdued Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Unless you know which sensor was on which corner you will need to reset the TPMS when you swap wheels as the sensors are each tied to a corner and the system needs to be reset for it to associate the sensor with that wheel since its probably changed positions. I do not know what it states in the service manual, but would not this necessitate resetting the TPMS each time you rotated tires?
