tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I currently drive an '04 WRX. I can't decide if I want to buy a new model year STi. Especially after seeing several with paint chip problems. Should I buy the STi or Legacy?
whitetiger Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 what do you want more? No compromise performance, or a nice mix of performance and comfort with more sophisticated stying.
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 That's the problem, I can't decide. I must be facing a mid-life crisis. I want the performance. But don't need it. My husband would prefer the SpecB - I would prefer the STi.
Gire Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I'd go with the Spec in a second as it can be made just as fast and is much much futher under the cop and ass-hat street racer radar. Plus, my God, have you seen the new hatchback shape in person yet? The Spec B looks 100% better, and is a Man's car. If you are 18, and a boy-racer, then STi all the way!!!1
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 I forgot to mention that I test drove the STi and loved it. Much quieter and smoother than my '04 WRX.
rao Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Test drive a Legacy and then compare the 2 Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
hassa Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 .... The Spec B looks 100% better, and is a Man's car. If you are 18, and a boy-racer, then STi all the way!!!1 :lol: Except that based on the previous post, the OP is apparently a woman.....
what Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 As soon as they change the STI in the next year or 2 I think you will want either the Spec B or the new either 2 door STI or non hatch version. Which ever one they come out with first.
ciadrew Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 ...and female driving a modded lgt = hot go for the specB!!!
Irrational Exuberance Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 the 08 sti is pretty hard to beat. it has nothing for power (186whp according the the dyno i watch) but it doesnt matter. the car feels planted... and cant split them on interior either. guess the big question would be do you want a sedan or a wagon? "i like my women the way i like terrorists... ...screaming gods name and ready to explode." http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/5479/troy3nu5.jpg
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 I did see and drive the STi. When they first came out I wasn't sure what I thought about them. The look has since grown on me. I notice more and more cross utility vehicles on the market that look strange and must be used to them. The Infinity FX and EX, VW Toureg, Murano, all strange shaped-cars. I turned 38 yesterday. I've always wanted a sporty car. My sister-in-law is terminally ill at 40. Made me think that you just don't know when your time is up. Thought I might as well get what I want, even though I don't need it, as I might never get a chance. My WRX is fast enough for the drive to work (15 miles). I don't race my car it is just a daily driver. The only thing that really is against the STi for me is that it is a new model year and I've seen some horrible paint chip problems. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1429111
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 ...and female driving a modded lgt = hot go for the specB!!! Husband didn' let me put a VF34 turbo or any other mods in my '04. Don't really see him on the LGT either. The way I drive (aggressive), I guess that's probably a good thing
Gire Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Test drive a Legacy and then compare the 2 Right. The Spec B will feel like a friggin Cadillac compared to the STi.
Gire Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 :lol: Except that based on the previous post, the OP is apparently a woman..... ZOMG a woman on this site?
Gire Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 the 08 sti is pretty hard to beat. it has nothing for power (186whp according the the dyno i watch) but it doesnt matter. the car feels planted... and cant split them on interior either. guess the big question would be do you want a sedan or a wagon? DO NOT call the STi a wagon. It's a cute little 5 door hatchback.
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 Most web sites do call it a wagon, even though it is a hatchback. I am surprised there aren't more women on this site. The Legacy looks like a car a woman would like more than a WRX. Maybe that's why I like the STi. If you told me a year ago that I'd be considering a hatchback, I would have called you crazy. The other car in consideration is the BMW 3 series. The 328xi would probably be powerful enough, but I would want the turbos in the 335xi. Then I am looking at nearly $40k. Plus 3.9% financing. The Subarus have 0% financing. That amounts to a couple thousand dollars over the term of a loan. I think the Subaru will be more reliable.
rao Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 The 328 is not nearly powerful enough. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
Gire Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 c'mon, it's the perfect automobile according to C&D mag.
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 The 328 is not nearly powerful enough. SpecB = 243hp 328xi=230hp STi=305hp 335xi=300hp I would think the 328xi would be similar to the SpecB - minus the turbo of course. My '04 WRX has 227hp. (All numbers from manufacturer's sites.)
rao Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 The 328 xi has a curb weight of just under 3,600 lbs. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 I drove a Cadillac Catera from '99 - '04 when I bought my WRX. That thing was heavy too.
AKLGT Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I currently drive an '04 WRX. I can't decide if I want to buy a new model year STi. Especially after seeing several with paint chip problems. Should I buy the STi or Legacy? you will have paint chip issues no matter what car you buy these days. the last 3 vehicles I've purchased, all the forums cry about the paint chips... just how it is. If you're concerned, invest in a 3M clear bra. All our vehicles have it and the new STI will also have it. Well worth the money imo. Personally, I'd say it'd be a pretty hard choice b/w the 08 Spec and 08 STI. I absolutely love my modded LGT, however the lack of rear folding seats in the 05/06 models kills me. Also, the way the trunk sits, still would be an issue. This is why I chose the new 08 hatch because all the rear seats fold down for a nice size cargo area. Plus, it doesn't scream "come pull me over" to the cops like previous gen STI's (I know, we also have an 07 STI). No giant wing, it just looks like a hatch. I'll be taking off as much of the exterior STI badging as possible and if people want to complain it looks like the Mazda 3, that's fine because I like the Speed3's. In fact, I hope the cops DO think it's a Mazda 3 and maybe that will mean less hassle from them. I plan on modding the car, but not until next winter when I can tear into it. price point for the spec and sti will be very similar, however if you want the performance end, you'll want to go STI. the new suspension sticks to the ground well without need for major modifications and the ride quality is somewhere between the LGT and prev gen STI's. The insurance cost however, well.... Spec will definitely WIN on that one. LOL. Wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle yeah!!!
tjcarst Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 The road noise in my '04 WRX was a shock. I heard it was worse in the STi's so I was very surprised at how quiet the '08 STi was when I drove it Not sure my dealer will let me drive the SpecB. They do have Legacy Limited and Special Edt in stock but all in automatics. I want a true manual transmission - none of that steptronic paddle crap. Not sure it would be a fair comparison of the STi to the SpecB with those other Legacy models.
