highlander Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 So is this in the metal or just the ceramic coating? Without removing them any easy way to test? soapy water? Vir Est Fatum Ut Perficio Concepta Suus Progenies. - Man is destined to fulfill the capacity of his lineage (i.e. Darwinism)
rao Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 That is called a crack Let me take a wild guess - those are headers, right? Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
highlander Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 I know..... many folks say ALL headers crack. Yes they are. I guess the real question is WHY do they crack as often as some report? rao Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 From what I have read here, they never crack or fail in any way The short answer is heat. The way that the manifolds are set up in relation to the turbo lends itself to a lot of heat buildup. The stock cast iron manifolds laugh at the heat, the aftermarket stuff doesn't. jerseyglock Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I don't see black exhaust spots near the crack...
SBT Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Crack in the ceramic coating, given no soot/carbon buildup or other signs of combustion gases. Given the radius of those turns, and the length of the cracking, I'd say that that coating was not long with this world. SBT - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
highlander Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 They are MR headers from Boost Junkie. No probs with them for fitment or value. Would recommend them in spite of what may be an issue now. Paul has been great to work with. highlander Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 Well after further inspection, I find that the visual crack extends almost all the way to the bottom of the tube. There is visible corrosion, no soot. I can get my finger nail into the crack though. I'm guessing there is a weld there, but don't know for sure. Boostjunkie Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Look for a carbon trail on the underside. If there is no carbon trail, then it is just a superficial crack in the top coat. The ceramic coating is two stage. The actual ceramic coating is silverish, and then a cosmetic black top coat it applied.
