boostsr20 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 My 05 has almost 50K miles on it and I'm going to be putting on some sort of bilstein soon. I was getting ready to order some Spec B tophats but wondered what other parts I should just go ahead and order now. Should I order new spring seats? What about the rear Strut mounts? I know they are re-usable but I'd rather not have to tear it down again in 20K miles just to replace this stuff. I'd much rather change it prematurely before it fails and causes other issues. Let me know what you guys think. Remember that I am driving on Michigan roads so the suspension takes some abuse.
whitetiger Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Ever consider getting koni inserts instead of a bilstein setup? It will cost you less and it should perform alittle better, plus its nice to have an adustable shock. Generally you dont need new spring seats unless the rubber is falling apart. they are cheap anyways so there is no harm in replacing them. Also, check how well the bearings in the front top hats spin. if they feel choppy or excessivly hard to turn, you may want to replace those as well.
boostsr20 Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 I considered the Koni's but didn't really want to mess with cutting up the stock struts. Are they very involved to install? Plus, don't the Spec B top hats give a better steering feel from the hard rubber/design? I don't really need the adjustability as its just a daily driver.
whitetiger Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 They are extremely easy to install. If you can drill and usse a hack saw or cuting wheel, then you will have no problem. the stuts dont differ much in terms of steering feel. Besides, with the konis, you dont have to buy spec b top hats, you can reuse the stock springs if you want, and you dont have to worry about tophats changin ride height or messing with spacers if you ever deceide to get aftermarket springs.

Is this the setup you are riding right now? I've got a 05 wagon that sees a lot of highway time and the occasional gravel road. I am interested in no-drop suspension but my wife does not want a stiff 04 STi ride. Did anyone in Seattle do the install? Cheers, Mike
