POLF Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 If you are experiencing engine noise on cold start up, you may have a serious issue. I took my 08 GTLTD to the dealer for it's first oil change yesterday, and mentioned that the car sounded like a Diesel motor when it started up in the morning, they kept it overnight to give it a cold start, and then they called today to tell me that they are going to strip the motor to find the issue, they think it may be that the cam is loose, or the bearings for the cam have an issue. So be warned if you have a noisy engine get it checked I cant beleive that the car is in trouble already with 3500 miles on it
Long Island Legacy Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 Are you sure its not the "air pump" that Subaru put on all 07+ Legacys. It runs for about 30 seconds on cold startup and makes the car sound like a truck. You can see how much air it pumps by the way it blows the steam plumes from the exhaust. Once it turns off the exhaust steam just slowly rises. Anyone else notice this on the car on a nice cold start?
POLF Posted March 12, 2008 Author Posted March 12, 2008 I hope it is just the tensioner, but I would have thought they would have found that easily, it sounds more like all of the valve gear is loose within the engine, more than anyhting, so I think the dealer is on the right track we will see, so far I am totally un-impressed with the Car.
POLF Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 Red When the engine is cold it sounds like there is a bag of marbles rattling around inside the motor. This noise persists until the engine gets warm, it has even coughed and sputtered during this warm up period (misfires)

SunburnNYC Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 my 2.5i is kinda loud on cold starts -but I'm pretty certain it is simply the exhaust.. when she warms up a bit the sound goes away, and is nothing like marbles.. I think it is a small exhaust leak and when the exhaust heats up and expands a bit it seals itself.

However, I still would get it checked out. POLF Posted March 15, 2008 Author Posted March 15, 2008 The car has been in the Shop for the last 4 days and I will not get it back until next Thrusday as I am away on buisness. But I am sure it is raasonalby serious as the dealer asked me to leave it with him so he could strip the motor and find the problem
POLF Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Car is getting a new short block, looks like the wrong bearings were installed during the motor build:eek: the dealr called Subaru to confirm this. So there we have it ( i hope) should get the car back Monday. I just have a hard time beliving that this could happen, I think something else is wrong and that they are fobbing me off with that excuse, either way as long as the car is OK then I will be happier.

YOU CAN HEAR A WHISTLE AT THE END OF THE NOISE RIGHT? LOLOL. ITS ALL GOOD GUYS. I TOOK IT IN FOR A CHECK ON THAT TOO. THEY SAID ITS OK. THE TIME ITS BAD IS WHEN YOU DONT HEAR THAT NO MORE.
POLF Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 No it was not the pump, the crank bearings were out of tolerance, The car is still noisy on start up but the noise now dispates after a liitle while, where as before the noise continued until the car achieved running temperature. Now all I have to do is replace the drivers side interior trim panel that the dealer damamged, fixing the gearshift surround bezel (not done correctly) Solve the dash rattle and the rear shelf rattle inside the car and it may just turn out to be a half decent vehicle. Subaru USA your quality stinks, if Japan knew the truth you'd all be fired!!!!!!
