Vendor input? Maybe? I keep seeing "93 Octane Tunes" for LGTs...

Most AP's and other ecu stuff has 91 and 93 octane tunes...am I just too big a doofus to have found the answer via search? Why aren't they tuning for 92 (the max we can get here in our area)...and are folks able to, when buying APs, etc, ask for a 92 octane map in lieu of a 93 (which would be useless to some)?

if you can only get a max of 92 oct, stick w/ the 91 oct map unless you go for a tune & are very sure of your gas quality.

edit: i defer to rob, he knows more automotive info than i will ever know

Because it i s not that big of a difference; if you can't get 93 in your ares use the 91 tune.

But Cobb's page shows a 2% power difference between 91 and 93. 14% and 16% respectively. Does it stand to reason a 92-octane tune would be 15%?

Paying for a useless tune/map would be silly, right?

I'll put it like this - Mazdaspeed6 is rated at 274hp on 93 octane. That was one of a few drawbacks IMO, with the car. Folks up here are paying for performance they'll never get.

I suppose, based on y'alls replies, the answer to my question is "Pay your $700, and just live with getting 'less-than' out of the AP"

I use the AP just for the sake of conversation, not a dig at Cobb.

If you want to use a 93 octane map with 92 octane you can do that and the ECU will keep you out of serious trouble. However it is not designed to do that. If you really need that last 2% then you need to have a custom tune done for your car or just run it.

Wait for the flood of people who think 1 point of octane makes a huge difference :hide:

You just indicated 1 point of octane makes at least a cautionary difference.

If I pay for x-gain on a car...I'd like to have x-gain.

Truth in lending - I spent $25,500 on a RX8, expecting 240hp from an engine which makes about 220hp. :(

jeez, how disappointed were you when you found out it was 220 @ the crank

Wasn't really...based on my first dyno, 186whp, I knew the car had a lot less than promised. With what should be a more-efficient drivetrain than the Miata, the RX8 was, IF it had 238hp at the crank, losing FIFTY-TWO horsepower. Miatas, throughout generations, lose about half that.

Two independent shops put stock Renesis engines on an engine dyno. Both got 217hp, IIRC.

On my previous engine (it's since been replaced) with cai/catback/ROOM fuse removed (which resets fuel trim), it hit 198whp...where it SHOULD have been, stock. "They" say the car makes more HP at 40,000 miles than 15,000 miles. I dunno. We'll see I guess. :)

Indicated that it is different, not that it matters :)

*cough*backpeddling*cough* :D

As for the Rx8, what do you expect from a 2-cycle motor

Funny - I actually pre-mix, too! :D haha :D

I am not backpedaling. The answer to your question is that the market for Legacy off the shelf maps is tiny and 91 and 93 octane maps cover the market quite well. If you can't get 93 octane than you should use the 91 octane maps or pony up the cash to get a map custom made (although that would be a horrible return on the investment) or you can use the 93 map, just like you can modify the car even though Subaru doesn't want you to.

Go to Tacoma, they have 93 octane for you.

Eh? Cool...but it's pretty impractical to have to 'hunt' to find the one-or-two stations offering gas I need every week. :)

I think the solution is to find a vendor who is offering one of their 'custom' tunes, free with AP purchase, and have 'em hook me up.

That is not the solution, trust me ;)

...or maybe just ask Cobb, et all, to throw in a tune for the 1 point of octane which does or does not matter. ;)

I currently am running a 92 PDX tune with 93 octane:cool:. I bought the AP with the maps on it and have had no problems. The other way around I would stick with the 91 until you get a aftermarket map.

"All right, brain, I don't like you and you don't like me - so let's just do this and I'll get back to killing you with beer." :spin:

Just sux because Cobb choosing two grades will cost me MORE that I could otherwise spend on other junk. :)

Buy a bottle of torco use like 5-10 oz a tank and use the 93 octane map. There is a torco concentration calculator floating around.

Just an option.

Around here you cant get 91 much of anywhere accept Sunoco. In CT its 87, 89, and 93. Truth is usually a Hess or Stop and Shop gas you can get 93 for cheaper than sunoco sells 91. out oc curiosity anybody want to list their location and what types of gas are offered.

Thanks for the tip. I'm too lazy to want to tinker with the car; just looking for plug-n-play options :)

Run the 93 oct Cobb map and log it, you will likely still be fine since their maps are generally on the conservative side. Unless you have a 07-08 LGT.
