ShadowImg Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Posted this on Somethingawful AI first, so copying here, you can intelligently paraphrase to make more sense on a LGT specific forum So I've been dancing around the thought of upgrading to a 2.5GT for a while, test drove both 06 and 07 and just couldn't convince myself to drop the money to do it, though I can afford it. Subaru advertises for trade-ins pretty heavily, and did another round recently so I went and spoke with a dealer again. Bottom line is that they're offering me the car at invoice (then $1000 cash incentives and 3.9% financing), and 8500 for trade-in on my 03 2.5RS. 8500 seems about spot on for what everything tells me dealer trade-in should be, or a bit above. Which of course means they get to resell it for about 11k, but them's the breaks, as I'd rather have the $1000 less sales tax in Missouri than deal with private selling the car for $2000 more value to me. Anyhow, I've liked the car for some time, test driven several of them, and just this weekend the 08, and really like the ride, though it's always hard to decide if you enjoy something without living with it for a few months. I love the RS' suspension/grip and feel, it's a great car (was my first, and served me well). In commuting to work I usually feel I want something a little more smooth, a bit more muffled from the outside world, and more comfortable inside. The only other place I find the RS lacking is power, but ultimately even it has enough anywhere but on the highway. Any 08 owners out there? Or just general GT owners? I may do the deal on Monday, but I'd really like to hear any cons that anyone knows about. It's too easy to get tunnel visioned on the things you like, so I'm looking for some outsiders to point out what I may not like. tl;dr: Tell me pros and cons of the 2008 Legacy 2.5GT as you see them.
ShadowImg Posted March 10, 2008 Author Posted March 10, 2008 I would love to, but I've bounced off all 3 dealers in the area, and had to do convincing just to get to invoice. I'm not a good negotiator at all, though the first price they gave me was about 31k, until I actually laughed at them for it.
Guest Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Simple: 1. Go, state want you want, say if they agree, you do the deal right now 2. They say no - walk out Nothing to lose.
ShadowImg Posted March 10, 2008 Author Posted March 10, 2008 Yup, that's what I've done, problem is they still haven't come down. One is supposed to call me tomorrow at the office after I left them saying I'd think about it friday. They were at invoice, so I'll see if I can't get them a bit under. I've been giving them the deal I want and walking out for almost 2 years now unfortunately. Got any advice for actually getting them to accept a deal down? What level under invoice is reasonable? I don't know holdback numbers, so I have no idea what I would consider reasonable, let alone them.
rocket Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 wait for an 09 and get the spec b with paint that does not peel off when you touch it
ShadowImg Posted March 10, 2008 Author Posted March 10, 2008 wait for an 09 and get the spec b with paint that does not peel off when you touch it Hmm? I'm not sure how a Spec B relates to this at all. As far as the paint goes, I'm pretty familiar with that from the Impreza. It's global to Subarus, not really isolated to the Legacy.
welby Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I could never bring myself to spend almost $30K on a car. Have you thought about hunting down a low mile used one, maybe an '05 or '06? I know there's nothing better than driving off in a brand new car, but considering the many thousands you could save buying used, it's something that should be considered
rocket Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 If you wait until 09 the only car with the 2.5 turbo will come in is the spec-B The new paint is worth the wait.
sirsimon Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 ^ Did I miss some thread with exciting info about improved paint quality? To the OP: Go for it. The GT will give you the comfort and performance you are seeking with the potential to mod it for more down the road.

I know there's nothing better than driving off in a brand new car, but considering the many thousands you could save buying used, it's something that should be considered I now see where I screwed up, and why rocket suggests the SpecB -- I'm after a 5EAT model, so while the 06/07 are attractive for pricing reasons, the new transmission is more attractive. To be honest I'm also one of the people who really likes the facelift that the 08 got, I know a lot aren't fans though. So now I've heard two things about the 09, new paint, and new audio. Someone needs to just go ahead and leak all this info already in full format.
