ER HC....this wont be cheap

hey guys I'm new here.

First off i will start by saying that i have an 06 outback wagon 5 speed. I figured since there was another thread on this topic that you guys here could help me out. About 2 weeks ago I was ripping around on some dirt roads here in Pennsylvania and basicly fryed my ECU after a creek crossing. We have those here because we are to lazy to build bridges...haha. Anyway I didnt even cross it. I pulled into the creek about 8 feet or so opened my door to check the water level and was deciding to cross or not. The water was about 2 inches below my door so i figured i was safe from any electrical problems. After about 10 seconds of making up my mind, i decided to not cross it, but it was to late. I put it in reverse, let the clutch out and boom, the clutch wouldn't grab. The cold water went into the bellhousing and the clutch went out. I have never had this problem before with any of my jeeps or trucks before that were manual, water with the clutch never seemed to affect clamping force, but it did on my outback. My friends and i quickly flagged down a toyota tacoma to pull my ass out and by the time it was pulled out, water started to come in through the floor...I meen, it wasnt even up to the doors, i was soooo pissed off at myself by that point. It ran, had a really bad miss and the check engine light was on but it was running. About 2 days later I got ER HC with a pinned coolant temp gauge and fan running on full speed and the motor wouldn't crank. I have gotten it to start for about 10 seconds a week ago so i know the motor is not hydrolocked.

I am so mad. I didnt even cross it...and the water wasn't even up to the doors!! I guess what I am asking is where can i find the cheapest ECU, the dealer want $740 and change...ouch.

I don't think Outbacks were meant for this kind of abuse. ECU is probably fine, I highly doubt it went under water.

Then it sounds like a $750 mistake. Sounds like the dumbass kind of thing I would have done 15-20 years ago when I was a teenager.

I don't think there are 'replacement' ECUs out there for less then that. I am by no means an expert though.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable then me will pipe in and give you a definitive answer though. :)

Um ya... It's a AWD Wagon not a 4x4. It's may be designed to be a puddle jumper, but it's not designed for submersion in the least. Search the FOR SALE threads for an ECU or start calling the junkyards in your area.

Lol, that sucks dude, a while back i was helping a friend with a civic he had stripped and turboed, the ECU was sitting on the passenger floor, the car was at the botoom of a valley, the whole car flooded the ecu was under 2 feet of water, 2 days the later it started right up lol

haha yea i am 20. Up here at college we get pretty bored on the weekend so we rip around in the middle of nowhere on old logging roads and stuff. But we do have a pretty good amount of legit roads that have creek crossings. I know my limit usually and don't do anything to crazy with that car and what pisses me off is that the water wasnt even up to the doors.

Last night i ran up to the dealer with the spare key and took a look at it. I took the ECU out of the plastic container and it doesnt look to have any corrosion on it, but their was deffinatly some water residue in there. I've called around and apparently their isn't one damn ECU in the country that anyone can get EXCEPT the dealer....so it looks like they are going to hold me hostage.

Cardone might be able to rebuild it, but they try to keep away from water damaged ECU's. I'm actually waiting on a call from them now.

Thanks for all the help guys, im sure march is going to be long and expensive by the looks of it for me.

also, check your grounds and everything else. this may not be the ECU, trust me from a guy who knows. Er HC just means a breakdown in communication. pm GTTUNER and he may be able to help. He is a whiz and helped me fix my car

Well - if you think that the ECU may have had it - rip it out and pull it apart. If it's dry inside that wasn't the problem. (or if the carpet is dry you won't need to go that far.)

If it's wet pull it apart and flush it with pure alcohol (Ethanol/Methanol) and let it dry. Hairdryer is a good thing. If it works after that you are fine - if it doesn't then you may need a new one.

This is best done as soon as possible after getting wet to avoid oxidization issues. Most of the electronic components actually can stand a soaking, so a little water temporarily shouldn't be a problem.

If the ECU and it's surroundings aren't wet - then I suggest that it's time to try to pull the codes out of it - it may be a sensor that has gone bad.

Just got back from the dealer. They quoted me $2640 + carpet and tax. So yea....ECU, wiring harness, pull apart the dash, this shall be fun, I'm just going to do it myself because there is no way i can pay for that. Its funny because they said that there was a ton of corrosion. I took apart ever conector i could find near the passenger floor and they were all perfectly clean. I started to pull apart the harness a little bit to take a peek and it all seemed fine...I dont know what to think anymore, all i know is that it is cold as hell out here to be working outside! This might have to wait a month or so. Thanks for all your help guys btw!

I hear ya about tearing around in the boonies, but I guess we did it in disposable $300 junkers (back in the 80's) so if they died; we would just abandon them and walk back to town. The only thing I can say is that ECU's usually survive if they get wet and then completely dry before they are juiced again, but they will cook if juiced when wet.

I toasted one in my Jeep while cleaning the engine compartment after some mudding. I usually had a plastic bag taped around it for high water reasons, but had the bag off for whatever reason. I got everything nice and cleaned off and went to start it with the hood up and as soon as I turned the key all the way forward the ECU went "poof" and I saw the smoke leave (we all know electronics work on smoke and when the smoke gets out they stop working:lol:) and that was all she wrote. You could smell it too.

Sorry for having a laugh at your expense, but I bet you will think twice before stopping in running water in your family wagon next time. My first rule of offroading in the mud and streams is never under any circumstances stop. I always just commit, keep the hammer down and check for damage on the other side. Then again I'm usually doing it in a highly modified Jeep.;)

We need pics of that thread where beanboy or somebody forded a stream with the LGT. Water was OVER THE HOOD!!! Made it just fine, if I recall. Stupid on his part though..
I'm pleasantly surprised... It was most certainly worth the couple bucks and 10 mins of my time.
