PiKap335 Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Searched and didn't come up w/ anything that sounded like what I'm experiencing. I was driving home the other day (car fully warmed up) and heard a constant squeling sound. Took a look and it seems to be coming from the cluster of belts (I'm not a mechanic) near the alternator. It's going into the dealer asap, but I'd like to get an idea of what the problem is before I head in. Any ideas? - 05 LGT 5EAT, 26K
ejoy1220 Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Possibly the tensioner pully is bad (bearings), the belt needs to be replaced, or one of the driven accessories has a bad pulley bearing. Go to the autopart store, get something called Belt Dressing. Spray it on the belts while the car is running. If the sound goes away, replace the belts, problem solved. If it doesn't your next stop is replacing the tensioner pulley.
JOE_1985 Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 my belts are slowly disentergrating at 47,000 is this normal?
robinlsb Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 my belts are slowly disentergrating at 47,000 is this normal? All belts slowly disintegrate:) "Belief does not make truth. Evidence makes truth. And belief does not make evidence."
rao Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Do not mess around with belt dressing. While the engine is off check how tight the belts are. They should move about 1/4-1/2" at the center of the belt between the pulleys. Most likely yours are either too loose too tight or worn out. A mechanic should be able to diagnose this in about 5 seconds. Belts are very inexpensive and very easy to change on a Legacy so eitehr way it shouldn't cost too much. Belt dressing doesn't cause any harm, it's not sticky or anything. Someone who has no idea what is causing a belt to squeal probably isn't going to jump right in and throw a belt on.
PiKap335 Posted February 26, 2008 Author Posted February 26, 2008 Thanks for the feedback. I initially thought it could have been a bearing of some sort that is worn out...I've heard belt squel's before and this sounds slightly different. Since it's still under warranty I'll take it in and let them deal w/ it ... I do like to have some understanding of what's going on though before I head in there. Seems a little abnormal for belts to be loosing up or bearings to be burning up @ 25K, don't you think? I'll try tugging around on the belts tonight and Ejoy you're right - I probably won't be changing any belts myself (lack of tools & it's been about 10 years since I've last done it).
outbackattack Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 my crank pully just went clepto on my today so dont feel bad about squeek my entire crank pully came off
PiKap335 Posted March 3, 2008 Author Posted March 3, 2008 Damn that sucks. My girl took it to the dealer -- loose belt. Didn't say which. Fixed it and sounds good as new -- at least for now
