Intake ?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I apologize if this was already talked about. I ran a few searches and came up w/ nothing. I want to get an intake soon but have been reading that it should be tuned. After intake install (I have not purchased one YET) does it make that much difference to tune the car?

The intake manufacturer shall be able to provide you with suitable information regarding this. If not - select a different brand.

But in general the intake can allow for better flow at full throttle and high RPM:s and if nothing else is changed the ECU shall be able to handle that. A different exhaust system shall also be within the parameters supported by the ECU unless you go for something really weird. It may also be a good idea to check out if the crank ventilation is sufficient, you may gain a little there too. Of course - you can always run into weird resonance problems, but using an intake from a well-known vendor will limit these problems.

You will be able to gain more by using a different turbo, modified intake manifold, different cams and valves, but in these cases you will need to update the ECU, change injectors, upgrade sensors and use a higher rated fuel too.

Or are you going to beat this: http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2007/11/sema-450-hp-2008-subaru-impreza-wrx-by.html :p

No you dont need a tune but it is basically a useless item without one, a tune alone would give you more power than a up pipe down pipe and exhaust with no tune. Hell you could jsut gut your down pipe and get a stage 2 tune and only spend 200bucks for a 50hp gain.

An intake will not net you any material increase in power unless you are using a much larger turbo than stock, and even then their benefit is questionable (not for you real racers out there of course , but for us regular folks) . Also, they come with fun problems ;) and you do need a tune to deal with the difference in the way that the MAF sensor is located in the intake airsteam.

how hard is it to gut DP and what are emissions implications?

its as easy as taking a long screw driver and pounding the inside of the cat out, chances are you wont pass emissions, but my car is registered up north where they dont make you take emission tests.

very ture, but there are some intakes that are more friendly to the stock tune than others base on their design. If the OP insists on buying an intake, he should get one of the "friendly" ones.

do aftermarket catted DPs make a difference from stock ones? CT had no emissions for like a decade but now they are back in full force...

Well aftermarket catted dps are usually bigger than the stock, therfore able to flow better, as far as a aftermarket catted dp with a stage 2 tune to a gutted stock dp with a stage 2 tune most people find there is very little difference, now if your gonna upgrade the turbo by all means get a aftermarket dp and up. But if you are just gonna go stage 2 such as myself and having a new baby with not alot of money to spare, gutted dp and a tune works just fine. Its also safer to have the car tuned rather than goin with a Access port aswell, its also cheaper than an accessport and with a someone who know what they are doin can usually get bigger power gains than an access port.

We have it too where i live, but 9 counties in Wisconsin dotn have testing, my grandparents happen to live in one of these, so my cars have always been registered at there house.

arent you lucky... only other state id have access for registration is in NY and i believe they have it too

Yes it is lucky, my first car being a 79 malibu with a 355, the exhaust was headers to cherry bombs to tips that came out just before the rear tires, it wouldnt have passed lol

Although NY has an emissions standard I have yet to have a sniffer, since the intro of emissions.

As long as you have no CEL's, there should be np.

You can look up the exact law to be positive, but the increased cost of registering in NY (depending on where the address is) may not be worth the hassle.

Perhaps CT owners should chime in here.

The K&n typhoon has a carb sticker and is smog legal. So far the only intakes that are ok for our cars i the typhoon and the AEM. I have the typhoon and I like it.

Well there are people who tune there own cars, but then there are also shops that can dyno tune your car to really see what kinda power gains they are getting from the tune. Most palces charge 200-400 for a dyno tune which is cheaper than an access port and better. Better because its a tune just for your car, plus most people can squeeze more power out of a dyno tune than a access port.

At this time from what I have read and experienced I will say actually only the K&N. I have heard the AEM is not very consistant and carries production differences. An experienced member with loads of tuning knowledge actually recommended against it.

An access port is a ECU rom loading tool, for the most part alot of shops who do dyno tune recommend you have an AP as well.

Thats strange, all the shops i talked to said that they dyno tune stock legacys all the time via laptop.

Yes with open source, but shops that are protuners this is generally a no no, atleast to publicize.
