Braking cancels left-turn signal

I have a 98 Legacy Outback that has a weird turn signal problem. Whenever I turn on my left-turn signal and then step on the brake, the turn signal stops until I let off the brake again. I use a trailer with it, not sure if that makes any difference. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

then it still sounds like a wiring issue but sounds like it is in the car itself. have a friend watch your tail lights and see what they actually do as to what they are supposed to do. ie does signaling left and right make only the signal lights light up respectively. and does stepping on the brakes make only the brakes light up... etc

The likely answer is that you have replaced the turn signal/brake bulb with the wrong model. The wrong bulb could cause this to happen by completing the circuits incorrectly.

Not sure what the relevance may be, but another thing that I noticed is that the problem seems randomly intermittent. Weird. What would that indicate?

I don't think so. The taillight/brakelight bulb (dual filament) is the same bulb, but the turn signal is a different bulb (single filament). I betting on a crappy job with the trailer harness install. It being intermittent would also point to the harness rather than a bulb issue.

It is still ugly.

Well, earlier today everything was working normally, but tonight it was back to the same problem again so I got out and watched as my wife operated the brake. When the turn signal is activated it seems to dimly blink the running lights. When the brake is applied brake light goes on and the turn signal light goes on but dimly and doesn't blink.

I poked around the wiring that splits off from the bulb to the trailer harness and it seems there's something loose where the wires go into the bulb. I got the lights to blink on/off then go back to normal by just pushing the wires around a bit.

So I guess I just need to make sure my connections are tight?
